Homecoming 2017

Plans for Homecoming 2017 are coming together very nicely.  A grand reception, inductions, music, a road race, golf, athletic events, March On, boat rides, and a barbecue highlight an event-filled weekend on campus.

New for this year: Alumni ‘Honor Alley’ will give noteworthy recognition to MMA’s Honor Classes (’47, ’52, ’57, ’62, ’67, ’72, ’77, ’82, ’87, ’92, ’97, ’02, ’07, ’12), offering reserved reunion tents for your class gathering.  Pack your favorite snacks and beverage to enjoy while watching the football game from a prime viewing spot.

Bring the youngsters! The Residence Life Department will be hosting numerous booths, inflatables and family-oriented activities throughout the weekend.

Reggae on the River 2017

The MMA Alumni Association wishes to recognize board member Mary Hutchins ’11 (photo, center)  for organizing and hosting the first annual MMA Alumni Reggae on the River Cruise aboard the Isle of Shoals Steamship Company‘s Thomas Laighton in Portsmouth, NH on a beautiful evening, July 26. Mary was introduced to the steamship company during her first SVO cooperative experience.

Complete with the reggae band Zeme Libre, one hundred twenty MMA alumni and friends cruised the Piscataquis River, enjoying the scenery, music and conversation.

Of special note, Captain Jeremy Bell ’98 (photo, left), and Captain Jerod Blanchette ’98 (photo, right), purchased the Isle of Shoals Steamship Company about five years ago and worked very closely with Mary to make the evening a special event.

Proceeds from the excursion will be donated to the MMA Alumni Seacoast Chapter Scholarship Fund. Many thanks to Mary, Jeremy, Jerod and all involved. Plans for Cruise 2018 are in the works!

What is the Annual Fund Vision 20/20?
–  John Gillis ’72

It’s clear: Maine Maritime Academy must increase fundraising capacity in this decade in order to keep tuition and fees affordable for all students and to assure the college of tomorrow is economically sound and sustainable.

To help us in this quest, the Harold Alfond Foundation has challenged Maine Maritime Academy to raise a cumulative total of $2.25 million dollars over the next three fiscal years (July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2020). When we meet that challenge and increase our alumni participation rate to 20% in 2020, we will receive $750,000 from the Harold Alfond Foundation towards scholarships for MMA students.

Why is participation important?

  • Your support helps to assure that MMA is economically sound and sustainable, now and into the future
  • When we are successful in the challenge your gift will go even further to help MMA keep tuition and fees affordable for all students and help them to reach their academic and career potential
  • Your support at any amount shows grant, corporate, and foundation funders that the MMA community believes in the MMA mission and the college is deserving of their investment

Please consider giving to the MMA Annual Fund at this critical juncture. A gift now helps us to reach the Annual Fund Vision for 2020.

Portland Reception 2017

Scores of MMA alumni and friends gathered on June 21, 2017 during the T.S. State of Maine’s 2017 training cruise “swap out” port visit to Portland.

Due to an overwhelming response, the reception had to be moved from the ship to the Ocean Gateway Terminal. With the beautiful waterfront as a backdrop, more than 140 alumni, spanning MMA’s 75-year history, along with over 150 friends, family and MMA staff, enjoyed an evening of conversation, memories and merriment.

Pictured are 1983 classmates (l. to r.) Alden Sachs, Clay King and Greg Lee.

Night By The Bay Returns

After popular demand, MMA’s Night by the Bay will return to the Portland area on Saturday, April 7, 2018. After a two-year hiatus, the Night by the Bay will be held at the Sable Oaks Marriott, South Portland.

Bill Full ’76 has graciously volunteered to chair this alumni effort, putting together a team to procure sponsorships, donations and items for the silent and live auctions.

The event will have a Mardi Gras theme complete with the State Street Traditional Jazz Band, featuring MMA’s own John Page ’68 on trumpet.

Stay tuned for further details as they become available. If interested in assisting Bill, please contact the Office of Alumni Relations at alumni@mma.edu.
