Communications Committee: Alumni Seal

The Alumni Relations and College Relations departments worked with a local vendor to digitize the MMA Alumni Association seal. This will offer better clarity at various sizes over different media and for apparel, gifts, and accessories.  

Alumni Participation Committee: Class Agent Update

Since introducing the Class Agent concept in the February 2017 e-newsletter, we’re happy to report several alumni have already stepped forward to volunteer! The Alumni Participation Committee and Alumni Relations Office are finalizing the campaign kick-off with informational and training sites to support this exciting and important initiative.

If you wish to be an agent for your class, or have a recommendation for a class agent, please contact alumni@mma.edu.

Alumni – Senior Banquet

The annual Alumni – Senior Banquet was held at the Cross Center, Bangor, February 8. It was a great event to welcome  seniors into the Alumni Association.

Joe Cote ’82, president of the Alumni Association, was the master of ceremonies. Joe presented $5,000 worth of scholarships offered by the Alumni Association and the Casco Bay Chapter.

Cristin Wright, president of the senior class, challenged classmates to participate in events and consider financial support for their alma mater. Director of Alumni Relations Jeff Wright gave a presentation to our future alumni on the Alumni Association mission, organization and goals, and shared the locations of chapters and groups around the US.  

One hundred thirty-five seniors were hosted by 45 alumni. The assigned seating made for a great mix of alumni and seniors at each table. One alumnus was so impressed with his dinner guests that he wishes to purchase an MMA tie for each.

Special thanks to the many alumni who supported the event. Also, thanks to the Darling’s Group, Camden National Bank, Bowden’s Construction, Creative Print Services, Evergreen Waste Service and Wallace Events for their generous sponsorships.

Women of Distinction

The Women of Distinction Alumnae Panel was held March 21 as part of our Women’s History Month activities. The panel featured alumnae graduating between the years 1999-2014 representing all academic departments.

Current students, faculty, and staff were in attendance, and panelists answered questions about their careers and experiences after leaving the academy. Following the event, students and alumnae had the opportunity to continue the discussion during dinner.

Thank you to the incredible Mariners who shared their afternoon and evening with us. We appreciate the valuable information and insights you gave us, including the notion that, as MMA graduates, “‘Not my job’ isn’t something we say… We do whatever it takes to get the job done.”

Fishing Derby

The Fishing Club at MMA hosted its first annual Ice Fishing Derby at Craig Pond in Orland on  February 25. Sixty-one registrants endured wet conditions in pursuit of “trophy” fish. Winners were:

Salmon, Robert Chapman – 22″

Brook Trout, River Ellis – 15.5″

Many thanks to the area merchants and the Alumni Association who sponsored the event and donated great prizes. Plans are already underway for next year’s event. We really appreciate the alumni and student participation and are excited to have a bigger crowd next year.

Annual Black Mountain Ski Event

Thanks for the picture Pete.  That was a fun event.  It only took about a half a tube of Ben-Gay to soften up the bruise from my spill and my limp has almost gone away.  I guess that I don’t bounce as well as I used to.

It was wonderful to see you guys.  (Class of 1971) must have had the most guys from one class there.  My wife says that if we weren’t the largest contingent, we had to be the best looking!  Stories of the “old days” were wonderful and brought back such great memories.  We need to get more guys there.  You don’t have to ski.  Come for the fun.  It was smart to have Maynard on hand just in case the lift equipment crapped out on the mountain.

Pass the word to other guys so that we can have even more there next year.  Roger Arsenault (our own), John Gillis (’72), and Ed Rosenberg (’72) did a great job organizing this event.  The venue was fun (everyone at Black Mountain was great), the music was good, the beer was good, and the camaraderie was off the charts.  Let’s try to make this even bigger next year.

DownEast Gathering 

Downeast Alumni gathered at the Bluebird Ranch in Machias on March 8. Classes from 1957 to 2013 were represented among the fifteen alumni gathered to hear Jeff Wright give a presentation MMA today. Thanks to Capt Bob Peacock ’71, current member of MMA Board of Trustees, for adding to the discussion. Pictured is Lincoln Roberts, Class of 2037, son of Caissie Nevala ’13 and Isaiah Roberts ’10.

Students Pay For Travel

More and more shipping companies are requiring our students to pay their own transportation to locations around the world when they are assigned a co-op or cadet-shipping billet. Because the cadet shipping program is a global program, the travel costs for a student can be overwhelming.

The Career Services staff is hoping to find support from MMA alumni who are willing to share their frequent flyer miles with a needy cadet shipper or someone in a co-op program with high travel costs. Please contact Tim Leach, Director of Career Services, 207-326-2276. Casco Bay and Ned Andrews Event

Members of the Casco Bay and Ned Andrews chapters recently held a reception at The Daniel in Brunswick. An excellent turnout of 47 alumni and 16 guests were on hand to hear Fred Harris ’67 speak on the state of international shipbuilding. In attendance were Tim McLaughlin ’91 and sister Patty ’90.
