Stephen B. Ericson ’73

Stephen Brent Ericson, 71, passed away on Friday, December 9 in Augusta, Georgia. Stephen was born on October 13, 1951 in Bangor, Maine, eldest child of Robert and Catherine Ericson.

Stephen was a son of Maine, raised in Bangor and spent the majority of his childhood hunting, fishing, and skiing on Beech Hill Pond. He was a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy with a degree in Marine Engineering. His colleagues at MMA gave him the nickname “Swede” for his Swedish roots. Shortly after graduating, he married his wife Holly Ericson and settled in Bangor. After years of international maritime shipping he went to work for multiple companies, including General Electric, DuPont, Anheuser-Busch, Westinghouse and Bechtel at Savannah River Site.

Stephen was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and craftsman. He restored two Chris Craft wooden boats, built and designed his beloved A-frame home in Bar Harbor, Maine. There was not a wood he couldn’t identify by scent or grain. Stephen was an avid coffee drinker, Sunday Show watcher, Patriots and RedSox fan. There was always a project to do or an item that needed one more coat of varnish.

Stephen returned to his home in Maine every summer with his wife Holly where they would spend their time on multiple projects taken from the likes of a Coastal Living magazine. Each night they would retreat down to the beach with all 5 daughters, their husbands, and 14 grandchildren to enjoy a New England sunset. He was a true family man, he called his mother every evening and never missed an opportunity to see his grandchildren.

Stephen is survived by his wife of 48 years Holly Cole Ericson of Augusta, Georgia, his mother Catherine Ericson of Holden, Maine, his sister Margo Toppan of Barrington, New Hampshire, and brother John Ericson (Kim) of Dedham, Maine. As well as his children, Courtney Atkinson (Tripp) of Moore, South Carolina, Katie Greenlaw (Ben) of Presque Isle, Maine, Cameron Fay (John) of Decatur, Georgia, Taryn Schwartz (David) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Allison (Garrett) Spence of Evans, Georgia and 14 grandchildren.
