Stanley P. Quinn, Jr. ’57

Stanley P. Quinn, Jr., 86, of Holly Hill, FL and former resident of Raymond, ME, passed away at his home, surrounded by family, on January 9, 2022, following a brief illness. Born on November 5, 1935, in Boston, MA, he was the only child of Stanley and Viola (Bowker) Quinn of Spring Lake, NJ.

Stanley was raised in Spring Lake, NJ and spent summers on Sebago Lake at their Raymond Cape residence. He graduated from Admiral Farragut Academy in 1954, followed by Maine Maritime Academy in 1957. His MMA classmates recognized him as the infamous receiver of sugar sheets (love letters), after inventing the world-renowned “Quinn Letter Recorder”. His love for music, especially in the cool vein, was noted by all, including the officers. On weekends, he sailed forth in his baby blue Ford. They bid him good luck and smooth sailing to the “Romeo of the Class of ’57”.

Stanley was a U.S. Merchant Marine and sailed around the world with Maersk, Sealand, the United States Lines, including one of the largest container ships afloat. He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard and Naval Reserves.

In 1961, he married Patricia Varney of Houlton, ME. They made their home in Raymond, raising four children. He was a member of the Raymond Fire Department, building one of the first fire stations on Main Street in Raymond, and once served as Deputy Fire Chief.

When he was not at sea, he owned and operated Lakeland Sand & Gravel. With an active real estate business, this included building roads and developments, paving and landscaping, as well as building many homes, other city parks and associated school site projects around the surrounding communities.

Stanley was a talented artist and loved working in his garden. He enjoyed windsurfing, sailing, fishing, and boating on Sebago Lake with his family, as well as surfing on the NJ and FL shores. He also enjoyed skiing and hiking. His love for dance was first introduced by his beloved grandmother (Elizabeth Bowker). His passion was swing dancing, and music, especially Jazz and Blues. He was known for his kind, generous, and thoughtful nature; always lending a helping hand to others.
After receiving the rank of Captain, he continued to sail until retiring to FL where he played a lot of golf and enjoyed exploring the botanical gardens and other natural habitats of FL. He began flipping houses as a hobby before settling in the Daytona Beach area. He was a member of the St. Augustine Jazz Society, Jacksonville and Daytona Beach Boppers, and Daytona Beach Moose Lodge. He had many close friends in FL he considered his second family.
