Richard H. Moody ’44

Andover MA – Dick Moody, aged 94, died at home on Monday, November 11, 2019. Richard was the son of Percy W. and Helen B. Moody and was a ninety-year resident of Andover, He attended Phillips Academy, earned a Marine Engineering Degree at Maine Maritime Academy, and was awarded a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Brown University. Dick served three years in WWII as an engineer aboard Liberty ships in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Believing in local industry and as an entrepreneur based in Ballardvale, he engineered a textile manufacturing plant and then transitioned into computer hardware manufacturing. Further responding to changing times, he went on to develop a rubber recycling facility. After a short run in production of industrial finishes, he turned to real estate and thrived in a 19-year career with his real estate and life partner Barbara.
Dick led the Andover Citizens for Equal Opportunity, The Andover Taxpayers Association, and was Leader of Boy Scout Troop 73 for 14 years. He was a charter member of Andover Better Chance (ABC), a Board Member Emeritus of the Andover Historical Society; and a lifetime member of A.V.I.S. He was a member of South Church for over 80 years and a 50-year member of St. Matthew’s Lodge AF + AM.
Dick spent weekends and extended retreats in Rangeley, Maine enjoying camping, fishing, hiking, canoeing, hunting, and skiing. He was constantly developing property improvement projects or had one under way. He delighted in enlisting new recruits to join the work party, or to join an expedition on one of the big lakes, quiet streams or hiking a mountain trail. His other interests included reading, gardening, birding, and dogs. He played ice hockey, tennis, paddle tennis, squash, and bridge.
He survived his beloved wife Barbara of 61 years, and is survived by his five children: Carolyn Lewis and her husband Van of Lynchburg, VA; Meredith Moody of Needham; Heather Holman and her partner, William Levy of Andover, Rick Moody and his wife Randi Lite of Needham; Janice Holden and her husband Seth of Andover, and 12 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at South Church in Andover, on Saturday, November 16th, 2019 at 11:30 a.m.
