James T. Lay ’69

BLUE HILL – James T. Lay Jr. died April 28, 2013, in Blue Hill, after battling cancer and lupus. He was born July 31, 1946, in Washington, D.C., son of the late James T. Lay Sr. and Catherine (Nimitz) Lay.

Lay graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1969 and enjoyed a 33-year career as a deck officer in the American Merchant Marine. He loved dogs, shooting, hobby gunsmithing, growing grapes, reading and computers.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 41 years, Shirley (Bullard) Lay; three sons, James T. Lay III and wife, Tracy, Jeffrey Nimitz Lay and wife, Wendy, and Richard Bullard Lay and fiancée, Julie; four grandchildren, Kyle Starling, Lindsey Lay, McKenzie Lay and Cole Lay, all of Georgia; brothers, Richard F. Lay and wife, Jean, and Chester N. Lay and wife, Marion, of Cape Cod, Mass.; several wonderful brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law scattered around Maine and Illinois; and numerous stellar nieces, nephews and cousins.
