Carl W. Jacobsen ’62

Carl William (Bill) Jacobsen made his last voyage November 3, 2011 from the home he painstakingly designed at 6226 O’Connell Street in Englewood, Florida. Bringing a touch of New England to Florida, the bay window and style of the house sets it apart from the other homes. It sits in the center of two large densely wooded lots surrounded by tall oak trees that provide shade in summer. The house is a short distance from the Gulf of Mexico. It was his favorite place to be. He enjoyed entertaining family and friends and sitting on his lanai enjoying the scenery, fresh air and tropical breeze..

Bill was raised on Commerce Street in Saco, Maine by his widowed mother Irene Jacobsen and his devoted and loving Aunt Min; both predeceased him. Bill was a graduate of Thornton Academy of Saco, Maine and Maine Maritime Academy of Castine, Maine. He loved Maine, Florida and the Sea.

Bill’s astrological sign was Cancer, which is a Cardinal water sign represented by the crab, the oceanic crustacean that seamlessly waves between the sea and the shore. Like the crab, Bill was hard on the exterior, yet soft and tender on the inside. He was strong, silent, and self-contained with a quick wit and a heart of gold. He was a voracious reader and an advocate of lifelong learning. His hobbies were woodworking, entertaining, and boating.

In 1978 he relocated with his mother and aunt from Maine to Tarpon Springs, Florida on the Anclote River. He came ashore in 1988 after more than twenty years at sea, and built his home in Englewood in 1990.

His final resting place is St. Raphaels RC Church in Englewood Florida where he was a member.

Rest in peace Mariner. Your watch is over.
