Calvin R. Pelley ’49

Calvin R. “Dick” Pelley, age 93, passed away on February 16, 2021.

Dick was a 1949 Graduate of Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine, and served in the Merchant Marine and also served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War. Dick attended Purdue University, Indianapolis Extension, majoring in Mechanical Engineering Technology. He was commissioned by the National Board of Boiler & Pressure Vessel Inspectors in 1953 and worked for Factory Mutual Engineering from 1952 to 1966. Dick worked for Peabody Coal from 1966 until 1972. He retired from Amax Coal Company in 1992 after 20 years of service. Following his retirement, he worked as a consultant for three additional years for Amax Coal Company. He then worked for Bobby Jones Golf Course in Sarasota, Florida.

Dick was a member of the National Association of Power Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Dick founded the Power Engineering Certification Program in Indiana and served as its Executive Administrator for the first 17 years and as Chairman of the Board of Directors until the time of his death. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Spartan Lodge No. 70, F & A M.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann, son John Lewis (wife Angel), daughters Mary Pelley, Catherine Carrico (husband Michael), Deborah Franco, and Doris Ann Lang (husband Tom).
