Arnold C. Sanders, Sr. ’43-2
Arnold C. Sanders Sr. of Wolfeboro, NH born November 21, 1921 died peacefully at Mountain View Community, Ossipee on April 5, 2017 at the age of 95.
He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, the only child of the late Carl J. Sanders and Norma (Arnold) Sanders. His love for Lake Winnipesaukee began at the age of 9 when he summered at his family’s summer home in Tuftonboro, NH. He attended Dewit Camp in the summer where he was an avid tennis player until he graduated from Park High School in Indianapolis. In 1940 he attended Dartmouth College majoring in Economics. In 1942 he left Dartmouth to attend the Maine Maritime Academy and subsequently joined the US Navy and served until 1946.
He married the love of his life, Ann, 6 weeks after he returned from the Navy, and together they returned to Dartmouth, gave birth to their son “Arnie” and graduated with babe in arms in 1948.
They began their life together in Duxbury, Mass. where they completed their family with the birth of their daughter, Karen. In 1955 he was transferred to Elmhurst, Ill working for US Gypsum. He took a position as marketing manager with Kaiser Aluminum which brought the family to California in 1959. After he received his brokerage license he finished his working career as a stock broker with Morgan Stanley.
Upon retirement in 1986 he and Ann decided to spend 6 months in CA and 6 months in Tuftonboro where it all began for them. They would leisurely travel from coast to coast taking a different route each trip and enjoyed all the beauty of the USA.
Their love of Lake Winnipesaukee and life long friends in New England led them back to Wolfeboro permanently in 1993. He loved his life on the lake, his old wooden boat, cruising the lake and chasing sunsets with family and friends. He had a dry sense of humor and a man of few words, but led by example in his kindness, honesty, integrity and loyalty. His greatest devotion was to his faith and his family.
He is predeceased by his son Arnold C. Sanders Jr. He is survived by his wife of 70 years Ann Flannery Sanders of Wolfeboro, his daughter Karen Sanders of Wolfeboro, his daughter in law Donna (Alumbaugh) Sanders of Auburn, CA, his grandson Brandon Sanders, granddaughter Kerry Sanders and a niece Judith Mitchell of Tarrytown, NY.
We will forever be grateful for the loving care and comfort from all the staff at Mountain View Community, and the hospice care provided by Compassus.
