Andrew Martin ’75

ROCKLAND — Andrew “Andy” Martin, 59, died Sunday, April 22, 2012, surrounded by his family at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Andy grew up on the “farm” on the Martin Road, known today as Finntown Road in Warren. He graduated from Medomak Valley High School in Waldoboro, class of 1971, and later Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, class of 1975. He was a member of the Maine Maritime alumni and traveled the world on the MMA State of Maine. Andy was also a merchant marine, U.S. Coast Guard licensed, and most currently worked as a chief engineer for B & N Fisheries out of Seattle, Wash. His job took him to Hawaii, and most importantly Alaska where he has worked for the past 20-plus years.

He will be remembered as the most caring, giving, and trusting individual, as well as the most determined and courageous fighter of life. He always boasted about his grandchildren who called him “Grampie,” and was involved with many aspects of their lives. His daughter Christina was a great comfort to him, and he had many quality moments with and loved her with all his heart. Andy was also a great influence to his stepson, Jesse, who he brought up from age 10. His wife said he was the best husband and partner that she loved dearly and shared many interests with.

To say Andy had lots of friends would be an understatement. He was liked by all and was someone to look up to. Although he passed from leukemia, he fought as hard as he could and never complained. He will be greatly missed by all and he is loved very much.

Andy was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, George and Leda Martin; maternal grandparents, Arthur and Margaret Penney; and father-in-law, Leroy Morey. He is survived by his parents, Robert and Marjorie; his mother-in-law, Laurie Morey; his wife, Su; daughter, Christina and her children, Kaylynn, Jaden, and Zachary; stepson, Jesse and his wife, Erica; brother, Alan and his wife, Laurie and their children, Charlotte and Jared; sisters, Amanda, Allison and her husband, Fred, Anissa and her children, Cody, Nicole, Emma and Gage; brother-in-law, Mark Morey; brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Kerry Colson and their children, Michael Shane, Travis and Paige; and special friends, Mike and Becca Mitchell.

A potluck gathering of love and remembrance will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 9 at 104 Limerock, Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home’s reception facility.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maine Maritime Academy, Attn: Development Office, General Scholarship Fund, Pleasant Street, Castine, ME 04420.
