Andrew M. Havey ’46

of Whispering Pines, passed peacefully into eternal life on Saturday, March 21, 2015 with his daughter by his side.
He was born in Hartford, CT to the late Shirley and Boardman B. Havey.

Andy grew up through the Great Depression and graduated in 1946 from the Maine Maritime Academy as an ensign, received his Third Mates License, and sailed on Liberty Ships in the North Atlantic to Europe. He was in the Naval Reserves during the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Maine and became the third generation of Haveys in the insurance field. He made his career in the Northeast with The Phoenix Co. and The Travelers Co. Over the years he served on community projects, loved garden model railroads, being active with his grandchildren, and spending time at the family cabin in Maine. He was a member of the Sandhills Mens Club.

He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Janice Peabody Havey and his step-mother, Muriel P. Havey.
He was always dedicated to his family, he never complained as physical problems increased, he was always encouraging, had a “wicked good” sense of humor and was so knowledgeable of music and history.

He is survived by their only child, Jan Havey Varner, granddaughter Amy Varner and her fiancé Christian Marchello, and grandson Captain Richard Andrew Varner and his wife, Heather J. Varner. Other family members, Dian and Bob Jones, Jan England, Mort and Mary Havey, Dick and Barbara Passmore, Allyson and Tony Diana, Larry Passmore, Amanda Blair and children, and former son-in-law Richard M. Varner. He was blessed to have many lifelong friends, especially Tom and Jane Marchi, Joe and Marie Krug, Andy Hoffmann and others in NC and Maine. We will miss him intensely. We want to thank Dr. Collins and Dr. Hipp for all their caring attention and excellent medical care.
