David W. Stilson ’00
Capt. David W. Stilson of Fairfield, Connecticut, passed away on August 19, 2026, at age 50. Born on September 25, 1975, in New Haven, David was a lifelong Connecticut resident whose love of the water, music, and adventure began early. He spent his childhood summers boating and fishing, playing guitar with his band, Holy Cow, and making memories and friendships that would last a lifetime. After graduating from Fairfield High School in 1995, David attended Maine Maritime Academy, earning a Bachelor of Science in Small Vessel Operations and a U.S. Coast Guard 500-Ton Mate’s License in 2000.
In January 2001, David began his career with Reinauer Transportation Companies as a deckhand. Through hard work, dedication, and a natural ability to lead, he rose through the ranks to become one of the company’s youngest captains in November 2012. He took tremendous pride in his work and earned the respect of those who served alongside him. Under his leadership, the tug Stephen-Scott received the Mariners Award three times.
David lived much of his life facing the challenges of C3G (MPGN), a rare kidney disease diagnosed at a young age. He endured two kidney transplants and nine years of dialysis, meeting extraordinary challenges with determination and resilience. When his illness eventually forced him to leave the maritime career he loved, it did not diminish his curiosity, enthusiasm, or desire to experience life fully.
David never did anything halfway. When something captured his interest, he immersed himself, learning everything he could and often mastering it along the way. He loved preparing a great meal, mixing the perfect classic cocktail, and bringing people together to enjoy both. A gifted guitarist and lifelong Pink Floyd fan, he founded the tribute band Embryo and built beautiful custom electric guitars. His interests extended to cheering for the Broncos, shooting sports, fast boats, and Shelby Cobras. He served as Vice President of Connecticut Seaport Car Club for four years. He was also the ultimate dog-dad to Dino and Ziggy, having a soft spot for rescues.
But more than his accomplishments or the many things he loved, David will be remembered for the person he was. He had a sharp sense of humor, a playful spirit, and an unmistakable personality. He was genuine, kind, fiercely loyal, and entirely comfortable being himself. If David loved you, you knew it. His friendships were not fleeting; they were lasting bonds built over years and decades, filled with laughter, shared adventures, and countless stories.
David was predeceased by his father, Robert Stilson. He is survived by his mother, Susanne Stilson; his sister, Laura Stoltenberg (Scott); his nephews, Gavin and Tanner; his niece, Emery; aunts, Margaret Whitaker and Ann Kidder; and a wide circle of friends from his school, maritime, automotive, music, and Fairfield communities.
He leaves behind a lifetime of memories, friendships that will endure, and a place in the hearts of those who loved him that can never be filled.
