Reginald A. Ferran ’74

WATERVILLE – Reginald Albert Ferran, of 7 John Ave., passed away on Feb. 3, 2015, at his home with family around him. He was the son of Albert Ferran and Theresa (Reny) Ferran and was born in Waterville, on Aug. 4, 1952. He graduated from Winslow High School in 1970. He went on to Maine Maritime Academy and earned his degree in Engineering in 1974. He had a distinguished career as a merchant marine. Reg shipped out on many different ships, some were overseas but mostly up and down the Pacific Coast. His longest held position was on the Brooks Range traveling from L.A. to Valdez, Alaska, and onto Panama. When our country made it mandatory to have double hulled vessels, he was part of the crew dismantling the ships. He spent a great deal of time in Portland, Ore. He achieved his chief license and was very proud of that.Reg had a gift of telling stories of his life’s events. He enjoyed being with people. He loved to get on his laptop and search for information. He always said that if he was disabled he would just become a brain and keep learning, no matter what. He was intelligent and wise. He knew facts and figures. He loved snopes on the internet. Boating was a passion for him. He loved water sports with his family and friends on China Lake, where he lived for many years. He also liked to play foosball. Early into retirement, he could be found in his basement workshop making stools for his family members and friends. He also loved downhill skiing.Reg is survived by four sisters, Joan Ferran of Sidney, Marie LeClair and husband Luxy of Winslow, Elaine Poulin and husband Norman of Waterville, Jeanine Libby and husband John of Winslow, and one brother, Albert “Bo” Ferran and wife Karen of Waterville. He is also survived by one son Reggie A. Ferran and his wife Nicole, with grandchildren Delana and Layne; two stepdaughters, Danette Hotham and Jaimie Thomas; and many dear nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles; many cousins; and good friends, especially Tom Salberb.At his request, a celebration of life ceremony will be held in the spring.
