Mark Coté (MMA’83E)

In this session, Mark Coté, Acting Provost and Academic Dean provides a brief overview of the Academic Division at MMA. He also speaks to the hands-on nature of the curriculum and how it translates into industry jobs.

Marine Transportation, Vessel Operations and Technology & Small Vessel Operations

Rick Miller, Tadd Bliss, and George Albert

In this session, Captain Rick Miller discusses MMA’s three transportation (deck) majors, what makes them different, the sea-time requirements for each, and the U.S. Coast Guard licenses involved. He also covers how each license translates into different job options after graduation. Captain Miller is joined by two students, Tadd Bliss and George Albert.

Marine Engineering Operations & Marine Engineering Technology

Joseph Harman (MMA ’86E) and Hank Stewart (MMA ’92)

In this session, Joseph Harman and Hank Stewart explain MMA’s Marine Engineering program and the difference between Operations and Technology. They dive into the curriculum, sailing requirements for the U.S. Coast Guard License as a 3rd Engineer, and discuss job options after graduation.

Marine Biology, Oceanography & Coastal and Marine Environmental Science

Jessica Muhlin, Abby L’Abbe, and Phoebe Churney

This Ocean Studies session is led by Department Chair Jessie Muhlin as she discusses Marine Biology, Oceanography, and Coastal and Marine Environmental Science. She explains the differences in the programs, summer internships and opportunities, and career pathways. The session also covers the benefit of combining an OS degree with the Small Vessel Operations (SVO) major. Assistant Professor Muhlin is joined by two students, Abby L’Abbe and Phoebe Churney.

Sadie Alley Ferreira (MMA ’03) with Tess Clark, Justin Waceken, and Emily Melick

In this session, Sadie Alley Ferreira explains MMA’s Power Engineering program and the difference between Operations and Technology. She details the curriculum, summer power field experiences, and discusses job options after graduation. She is joined by three current students: Tess Clark, Justin Waceken, and Emily Melick.

Kirk Langford, Rachel Bunker, and Avae Trainor

Kirk Langford explains MMA’s International Business and Logistics program, why it is considered one of the best logistics programs in the country, and the many fields our alumni are employed in after graduation. Professor Langford is joined by two graduating seniors, Rachel Bunker and Avae Trainor.

Marine Systems Engineering & Marine Systems Engineering 5-year

Doug Read and Mary Shea

Doug Read, the Systems Engineering Coordinator, outlines the academic degree for the Marine Systems Engineering major, its focus on Naval Architecture, and the optional 5-year program that incorporates the U.S. Coast Guard 3rd Engineer’s License. Professor Read is joined by graduating senior Mary Shea.

Steve Peed with Olivia Harriman, Renaissance Lyman, Kristen Gier, and Chloe Smedley

Steve Peed, MMA’s Athletic Director, is joined by four students as he discusses the many athletic conferences in which our teams compete. He also reviews all of the team sports that are offered at MMA, the stellar academic record of our athletes, and their leadership development program, inCommand.

Regiment

Captain John Cashman, George Albert, and Mary Shea

In this session, Captain Cashman discusses the Regiment of Midshipmen, its purpose, and what is required by the U.S. Coast Guard. He explains the leadership roles available to students and the voluntary options for those who are not in an unlimited license program. Maine Maritime students, George Albert and Mary Shea, also provide their perspective.

LT Ian Gray, LT Kate Siepert, MIDN Tristan Walker (NROTC), and MIDN Nathanael Poff (SSOP)

Lt. Gray discusses MMA’s Navy ROTC program, 4-year and “sideload” scholarships, the Marine Corps Option, and Commissioning. Lt. Siepert details the Strategic Sealift Officer Program for the unlimited license majors that culminates in a Naval Reserve Commission; the Student Incentive Program; and how to apply. MMA students, Tristan Walker and Nathanael Poff, join in the discussion.

Kelly Gualtieri

In this session, Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management, Kelly Gualtieri, discusses the cost of attendance at MMA, what is included in both the direct costs and indirect costs, how merit money is awarded, and additional scholarship opportunities available to students.

Janice Folk with Avery O’Neal, Sarah Gilmore, and Bryant Peterson

Director of Residential Life and Student Activities, Janice Folk, outlines the housing options at MMA, student activities, clubs and organizations, and student life overall. Along with three students, she explains how our many services, such as health services, our barber shop, and counseling, are all centrally located in Curtis Hall. This overview will help you to see how our campus community is one big family!

Joceline Boucher, Accessibility Services Director, shares information regarding tutoring services, accessibility services, and other support services available at MMA’s Buoy House.

Accepted Students

Janice Folk

Director of Residential Life and Student Services, Janice Folk, joins in again to discuss next steps for accepted students, including changes for New Student Orientation, how to access your MyMMA portal, and checking your MMA email regularly. She also addresses issues that sometimes come up for incoming students and responds to questions.

Wrap Up and Q&A

While the campus is very empty these days, we do have pictures of our labs, classrooms and students to share with you. During this final session, faculty and student presenters answer questions submitted by participants and Kelly Gualtieri wraps up the event.
