After sailing more than 1,000 nautical miles, Bowdoin has returned to Castine! ⛵️ Students aboard were completing CR214, a hands-on summer course with no prerequisites that introduces the fundamentals of seamanship and the ins and outs of living and working together on a traditional rig vessel.... We caught up with the crew as they docked to hear more about what they learned along the way. 🌊⚓️

Cadet Shipping Spotlight:
Midshipmen Ryan Moriarty (MTO) and Kieran Wilkins (MSE-5) are gaining real-world experience this summer aboard the Genie Lab, working in the dynamic waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Hosted by Laborde, both cadets are applying their classroom knowledge to life at ...sea—Ryan on the bridge and Kieran in the engine room.

Having two MMA students aboard allows for both collaboration and cross-discipline learning, making this an especially valuable assignment. The Gulf continues to be a critical training ground for MMA cadets preparing for their careers in the maritime industry.

This summer, MMA Ocean Studies students Natasha Kopeck and Hannah Mellor are at the forefront of both an intriguing and impactful project: Year-Round Monitoring of Plankton in Penobscot Bay. 🌊

With support from the Maine Coastal and Marine Climate Fund, the team—led by Drs. Whittaker,... Whitney, and Baer—is building a baseline to track ecosystem health and climate change impacts. The team will monitor plankton year-round using oceanographic monitoring buoys located in Smith Cove, off the coast of Islesboro, and off the coast of Hurricane Island. The team had the opportunity to deploy MMA’s own buoy: SCOOT (Smith Cove Ocean Observation Tool). Students will be trained to collect and analyze plankton using the FlowCam imaging system, becoming both skilled technicians and science communicators. Plankton community information will be freely available on MMA’s website, while buoy data from Hurricane Island will be accessible through NERACOOS (Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems).
