⚛️ Nuclear Lecture Series — Open to the Public & Livestreamed

Join us for the next presentation in Maine Maritime Academy’s Nuclear Lecture Series:

“The Current State of Nuclear Energy: Implications for the Maritime Industry”

- Tuesday, February 24, ...2026
- 4:00 PM (ET)
- Delano Auditorium, Maine Maritime Academy

This session will feature Brett Plummer, an adjunct professor and internationally recognized nuclear industry leader with more than four decades of experience in nuclear power operations, leadership, and project management. His career began with service in the U.S. Navy’s nuclear program and includes senior leadership roles at Maine Yankee and Seabrook stations, culminating as Vice President Nuclear & Chief Nuclear Officer at NB Power’s Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station. In that role, he has helped lead strategic initiatives, including the advancement of small modular reactor technology and clean energy development.

Plummer has also served on major industry advisory groups and boards, contributing to national and international discussions on nuclear safety, innovation, and the future of low-carbon energy.

Don’t miss this opportunity to gain insight into how nuclear energy is shaping the future of maritime operations and global energy systems.

Life at sea calls for both technical skill and time to reflect. ⚓📚

As we prepare for the delivery of the new STATE OF MAINE and the upcoming summer sea term, we’re seeking donations of funds and books to help build the ship’s onboard library.

With your support, this ...library will provide cadets and crew with a well-rounded collection of educational and recreational resources — creating a lasting asset for students and staff for years to come.

More information and ways to support are available at:

⚓ A Day with the NTSB at Maine Maritime Academy 🚢

Maine Maritime Academy was proud today to welcome two distinguished alumni from the National Transportation Safety Board’s Office of Marine Safety for a full day of engagement with MTO and VOT students.

🎙️ Marcel Muise ...(MMA ’95), Marine Accident Investigator in Charge, brings extensive experience leading major marine casualty investigations — including the investigation of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore. His work highlights how thorough investigations translate directly into safer maritime operations.

🎙️ Bart Barnum (MMA ’06), Senior Marine Engineer and Investigator in Charge, offers an engineering-focused perspective on accident investigation, systems failures, and how lessons learned shape regulations and best practices across the industry.

Throughout the day, both speakers will visit multiple classes, discussing:
• The role and methods of the NTSB in the maritime industry
• How accident investigations promote safety and accountability
• Real-world case studies, including bridge resource management and casualty analysis
• The connection between operational decisions, engineering systems, and investigation outcomes

The day concluded with keynote presentations by both speakers, bringing together cadets for a broader look at how accident investigation drives continuous improvement in maritime safety.

This marks the second NTSB visit to MMA in the past two years, reinforcing the Academy’s commitment to preparing students for leadership and safety-critical roles in the maritime industry.
