Dean and Professor Emerita, Maine Maritime Academy, retired.
Sue Loomis was first hired in Maine by the Department of Educational and Cultural Services to design, monitor and evaluate high school community educational programs throughout Maine. She then served as Professor of Humanities and Communication for 35 years at Maine Maritime Academy retiring as Dean and Professor Emerita in 2021. As Chair of the Department of Arts and Sciences for 15 years, she developed the Communications Across the Curriculum program; the Interdisciplinary Studies Program; directed the College Outcomes Assessment Team, the Tutoring Center for Writing, Study Skills, and First Year Experience for students. Loomis was selected as MMA representative to the National Network for Women Leaders in Higher Education and is listed in Who’s Who for excellent Professors in Higher Ed. As the recipient of numerous grants to support campus distinguished lecture series, she served as a member of the Faculty Promotion and Retention Board and has regularly presented papers at national and international conferences focusing on teaching excellence and faculty evaluations. Loomis was appointed by MMA Presidents to serve on their incident review teams, judiciary boards and the College Honor Board for many years. As a founding trustee for local organizations such as the Castine Arts Association, Colloquy Downeast, Music Library and Chorale in Blue Hill, she served as an Advisory Member for the Collins Center for the Arts at University of Maine, a Trustee for George Stevens Academy, and as an Adjudicator for the Maine Forensic Society, and Olympics of the Mind. Sue holds a B.A degree in English and Philosophy from Regis College, Weston, an M.A.degree in English from University of Maine, and is a graduate of the Wellesley College Institute for Women in Higher Education Management.
She has raised two fine sons, one an architect and one an international pilot and she has lived in Castine for over 50 years. However, and yet, she is still considered a Bostonian!
