Fulbright Association Maine Chapter to Host Arctic Education and Fulbright Event at MMA

CASTINE, Maine—The Maine Chapter of the Fulbright Association will host a morning of presentations on the Arctic, climate change, and the Fulbright Scholar Program at Maine Maritime Academy on Friday, July 10, 2015. The public is invited to attend the three presentations, which are offered free of charge.
A breakfast and networking session will precede morning presentations from 7:30-8:30 a.m. Later in the day, a dinner and presentation will be given by Captain Richard (Rick) Miller who will speak on the subject of “Arctic Sailing on the Bowdoin: Memoirs of a Captain” at The Manor Inn in Castine. Maine Maritime Academy Training Ship State of Maine Crew Rescues Sailboat Captain off of Halifax, Nova Scotia

CASTINE, Maine—Maine Maritime Academy’s Training Ship State of Maine, transiting the Atlantic Ocean, responded to a distress call yesterday morning. The training ship was heading toward Portland, Maine Wednesday morning when Captain Leslie Eadie was contacted by the U.S. Coast Guard Regional Coordination Center in Boston regarding a sailing vessel in the vicinity that was taking on water. The Prodigal, a sailing vessel registered in Norfolk, Virginia, was battered by recent storms, and its Captain, Michael Hurley, had radioed for help.

Maine Maritime Academy to Offer Online Certification Course in Environmental Regulations, Law, and Compliance Issues for Mariners and Shipping Industry Professionals

CASTINE, Maine—Beginning June 22, 2015, Maine Maritime Academy will offer a professional course in Environmental Regulations & Ethical Industrial Compliance (EREIC), a self-paced, online course awarding four Continuing Education Units and a certificate of completion. The course is designed to educate mariners serving on United States-registered vessels and those who work with them about environmental regulations governing their industry.

Student Contributes Lead Gift of $500,000 to Schooner Bowdoin Fundraising Campaign from Family Foundation

CASTINE, Maine—Dr. William J. Brennan, president of Maine Maritime Academy, announced today that the Bowdoin Centennial Campaign—a $1.6-million-dollar fundraising campaign launched by the Academy in November of 2014—received a lead gift of $500,000 from the Herman D. Pollock Family Foundation. The gift was initiated by Jeffrey Pollock of Houston, Texas, a master’s degree candidate in the Global Logistics and Maritime Management program.Read More…

CASTINE, Maine—The 2015 Commencement will be held at Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday, May 2 at 11 a.m. at the Alexander Field House. Christopher J. Wiernicki, an internationally recognized naval architect and business leader, will be the college’s Commencement speaker. Wiernicki currently serves as the Chairman, President and CEO of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), a leader in classification and certification services for the global offshore and marine industries, and Chairman of ABS Group, a leading global provider of technical services.
