CASTINE, Maine—Beginning June 22, 2015, Maine Maritime Academy will offer a professional course in Environmental Regulations & Ethical Industrial Compliance (EREIC), a self-paced, online course awarding four Continuing Education Units and a certificate of completion. The course is designed to educate mariners serving on United States-registered vessels and those who work with them about environmental regulations governing their industry.
The course covers five modules, including water quality, air quality, solid & hazardous waste, pollutant health effects, and legal investigations & enforcement of rules. Each module will develop students’ ability to recognize and effectively deal with regulatory compliance and professional ethics issues for persons working in the U.S. Merchant Marine and associated fields. All course activity will be offered through the Canvas Learning Management System, so students need only a computer and reliable internet connection. Tuition cost is $1000.00 for the eight-week course, which can be completed at the individual student’s pace.
Ms. Flood developed the EREIC course in 2012 with grant support from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation: www.nfwf.org. One hundred percent of professionals who have previously completed the EREIC course have indicated the course significantly improved their awareness and knowledge of Maritime Environmental Regulations and Ethical Industrial Compliance, and they were pleased with the resulting Certificate. Regulatory changes through Spring are reflected in the course material, including topics such as IMO Polar Code and North American Emission Control Area.
Lead instructor and Chair of Maine Maritime Academy’s Engineering Department, Professor Laurie Flood, holds a B.S. in Marine Systems Engineering from Maine Maritime Academy, an M.S. in Civil (Environmental) Engineering from the University of Maine, and a Masters in Environmental Law and Policy from Vermont Law School. Additionally she holds a 3rd A/E USCG license.
