CASTINE, Maine—At Maine Maritime Academy’s Convocation on September 1, 2014 a new Dean addressed the students and community as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. Dr. David Gardner told the audience, “I want you to get involved, take responsibility for your success, and seek challenges. Don’t be a bystander. Take chances. Pull a rabbit from a hat: ace physics, recover a fumble on the football field, publish a research paper, create something wonderful, be a leader, stand up for what’s right. Surprise us. Amaze us. Make us go, “wow, how did that happen?”
Previously Dean of Pre-Medical Programs at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, Dr. Gardner also spent ten years as professor of Biology and Biochemistry at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia.
Gardner currently serves as U.S. Coast Guard Captain and Reserve Chief of Staff for the First Coast Guard District, Boston. Following completion of his tour at the First Coast Guard District, he will be assigned to Coastal Riverine Group Two in Little Creek, Virginia. Captain Gardner has been recalled to active duty four times since 2002, including Operation Unified Response in Haiti and for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Dr. Gardner earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Trinity College and a Ph.D. in cell & molecular biology from Duke University. He has also studied at Cornell University’s Shoals Marine Lab, MIT’s Whitehead Institute, National Defense University, the U.S. Joint Forces Staff College, and the U.S. Naval War College. He has extensive teaching, research, publications and grant experience.
Captain Gardner and his wife, Dr. Bridget Gardner, are new residents of Castine, Maine. They have two sons; Nathan, who is an Airman stationed at Kadina AFB in Okinawa, and Ben, who recently graduated from high school and plans to enlist in the Coast Guard.
