O’Neil, a native of Bar Harbor, Maine, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Vessel Operations and Technology from Maine Maritime Academy in 2018. She holds a 1600 GRT Mates license and 100 GRT Masters license. During her time in Castine, Shelby was a member of both the women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse teams.

After graduating, she went on to work for the Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company as a Mate and a Captain, operating their powerful jet-powered catamarans. She has worked on tugboats in Savannah, Georgia, Philadelphia, and Pennsylvania and worked on a platform supply vessel in Port Fourchon, Louisiana. She also volunteered her time as an assistant coach for MMA’s Women’s Lacrosse for two seasons after graduating. Currently, Shelby is the private captain on a Hinkley jetboat for a couple in Northeast Harbor.

In her spare time, Shelby enjoys lobstering, riding her horse Miles, and spending time with her boyfriend Max, whom she met while at MMA. Recently, along with her father, Shelby finished restoring a 1968 Camaro.
