Works continues at the shipyard in Boothbay Harbor this week! Efforts to remove planking are ongoing and we will enter the next stage of the project as plans for the frame sections that need replacement are finalized.
Meanwhile, the students that make up Bowdoin’s Schooner Crew began our yearly winter maintenance routine at the MMA Waterfront in Castine. The crew started with servicing blocks; the blocks of the ship are the heart of the running rigging that is used to control the sails. It is vital that these blocks are kept in good working order. The crew will disassemble, clean, grease, varnish, and reassemble all of the 63 blocks that make up Bowdoin’s rigging. Throughout this process the Schooner Crew will also be working on sanding deck boxes, varnishing spars, repairing rigging, and handling a multitude of other details that keep the vessel looking good and sailing every summer and fall.
Thank you to our Schooner Crew for the hard work!
All the best,
Captain McLean
