My grandfather was like many veterans of the Great War and WWII. He did not speak of his experiences. I first learned of my grandfather’s role in WWI (the great war) as a Merchant Seaman when he joined me on my first ship. He told me about shipping flour and sugar from Cuba to Russia. We shared an experience transiting through the Kiel Canal in Germany many years apart (his trip was during WWI and my voyage was on freshmen cruise with MMA).
