My grandfather, Edward Twohig, served the US Army and Allied Forces during the years of the Second World War.
Studying abroad in England when the war broke out, he was initially enlisted into the Royal Air Force and was tasked with air field repair. Ed survived the horrors of German air raids during the Battle of Britain and, after America’s entry into the war, was transferred to the US Army Air Corps. After the invasion of France he was deployed to airfields throughout western Europe through to the end of the war. He rose to the rank of technical sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1945.
Ed’s love of aircraft continued past the war. He would often visit his old friends in England, going back often to fly bi-planes and to search for old warplane parts from wreaks throughout England. His love of planes may have not passed on to me, but I do share his love of travel and history.
Ed passed away on on January 27, 2012; his service will never be forgotten.
