2020 Annual Regimental Awards

Welcome to the 2020 Regimental Awards Banquet! During this event we will recognize the superior accomplishments of our Midshipmen and to celebrate their vision, effort, and tenacity. Award recipients have demonstrated a path to success for their peers and serve as a models for others to follow while attempting to duplicate their achievements. This year, 14 students have been nominated for nine distinguished award opportunities. Awardees from each category will be announced during the virtual banquet.

It is our honor to host tonight’s event and recognize some of the many talented and successful students that are a part of the Maine Maritime Academy Regimental program.

Sea Coast Alumni Chapter Scholarships

The Sea Coast Alumni Chapter Scholarships are comprised of two awards. The two scholarships are the Captain Thomas Smith Scholarship Award of $1000 given to the Cadet Master and the Paul Mercer Scholarship Award of $1000 given to the Cadet Chief Engineer.

Portland Marine Society Scholarships

The Portland Marine Society, represented by Captain David Sulin, Chairman of the Portland Marine Society Scholarship Committee (Class of 1971) on behalf of Captain Jeff Wadman, President of the Portland Marine Society and Captain Larry Wade will award four $2000 scholarships to the following Midshipmen based on their academic performance and leadership abilities.

Bangor Seadogs Chapter of MMA Alumni Association Scholarships

The Bangor Seadogs Chapter of Maine Maritime Academy Alumni Association, represented by Joe Cote, former President of the Bangor Seadogs and current President of the MMA Alumni Association, and Perry Mattson, former Secretary of the Bangor Seadogs Chapter, will award three $1000 scholarships to the following Midshipmen based on their academic performance and leadership abilities.

Al Brown Award

The Al Brown Award and $500.00 scholarship given by the family in honor of Al Brown and is in Recognition of the Midshipman who has excelled in the study of Casualty Analysis.

Regimental Alumni Development Award

The Regimental Alumni Development Award is awarded to the student who exemplifies diligence in the Marine Engineering program. With this award is the opportunity to attend a conference sponsored by Artec. A perpetual plaque hangs in Curtis Hall with each year’s recipient name engraved on a brass plate.

Admiral Warren C. Hamm Award

The Admiral Warren C. Hamm Award and $1000 scholarship was started by Admiral Hamm, ’49 to recognize a student who exemplifies the traits of leadership, accountability and loyalty. This particular award is reserved for a 3/C Midshipmen. Each year, the recepient’s name is engraved on a brass plate and is added to a perpetual plaque that hangs in Curtis Hall.

Lester R. Paton Naval Leadership Sword Award

The Lester R. Paton Naval Leadership Sword is presented to a 2/C Midshipman who continuously looks to further the goals and mission of the Regiment, regardless of rank or responsibility.

Eugene J. Silva Award

The Eugene J. Silva Award and $500.00 scholarship is given to a First Class Midshipman of any rank who demonstrates the qualities of leadership and character as described by Eugene J Silva ’64. These qualities include personal honor, integrity, courage, truthfulness, fidelity to principle, self-disciplined, inspirational, tenacious, tough, fair and caring in the treatment of those in his/her charge. In short, the leader who inspires others to follow shall be the recipient of this award. Each year, the recipient’s name is engraved on a brass plate and is added to a perpetual plaque that hangs in Curtis Hall.

Wedge Scholarship Award

Recipients of the Wedge Scholarship Award and $500 scholarship are nominated by the outgoing wedge in recognition of a rising Midshipman who is taking the upmost advantage of leadership opportunities within the Regiment of Midshipman.
