Homecoming 2016 and 75th Celebration

Hundreds of alumni returned to Castine and the MMA campus to participate in Homecoming 2016 festivities and the 75th Celebration of MMA’s history. Receptions, recognitions, inductions, comedians, a road race, alumni and student athletic events, March On, boat rides, a waterfront barbecue, street dance, fireworks and cake highlighted an enjoyable and festive atmosphere on campus and in the community. To view images, visit our MMA Facebook gallery and view first-year student Caiden Shea’s aerial video.

The results of the summer long MMA Alumni Association Board election concluded as results were announced at the annual Alumni meeting during recent Homecoming festivities.

Our newly elected President of the MMA Alumni Association is Joe Cote ’82; Vice President is Bill Full ’76; Treasurer is Cal Lechman ’65; and Clerk is Michael Savasuk ’74.

Six board seats were voted on as well. Incumbent members John Gillis ’72, Marc Gousse ’82, M. Shawn Longfellow ’86, and Chet Manuel ’67 were re-elected for another four years. The board welcomes new members Mary Hutchins ’11, and David Witherill ’76.

This year’s election had a great response rate compared to years past with a six-fold increase in the the number of ballots returned. Thanks to all who participated.

Dining In Hosts Wanted

Each year, President Brennan, the Commandant of Midshipmen and Regimental Staff host a formal Dining In for all sophomores at MMA. This formal dinner setting teaches the “do’s and don’ts” of dining in a formal, business-like atmosphere. The events will be held November 14th, 16th and 17th, and December 5th, 6th and 8th.

Reinforcing information presented in the classroom, Dining In is complete with a receiving line, tips on proper etiquette, table manners, utensil use and conversation topics to prepare students for a real-world business dining experience.

We invite all alumni and their significant others to join us as host/hostess. If you are interested in participating or have questions, please contact Janet Acker in the Regimental Office at 207-326-2250 or janet.acker@mma.edu. You will enjoy a full-course meal in an intimate setting interacting with alumni and MMA students. Please join us!

Bay State Chapter Tailgater at Mass. Maritime

It was a beautiful day on Saturday, September 17th as the MMA Alumni Association hosted a tailgating event on the campus of Massachusetts Maritime Academy. It was also enjoyable to watch the Mariner football team bring home the Admiral’s Cup in a thrilling contest. Adding to our pride, the Mariner volleyball team made it a clean sweep, beating USMMA, Mass Maritime and SUNY Maritime in the Mariner Volleyball Classic. It was great to see so many alumni attend. Thanks to the many Bay Staters, as well as alumni from Maine to Connecticut, for attending.

Strategic Plan to Strategic Action – Bill Full ’76

In the issue before last we spent a little bit of time explaining how the new Alumni Association Strategic Plan was developed and its four basic Strategic Goals: Financial Support, Alumni Participation, Communications, and Working with Outside Entities. In this second piece, the Board would like to fill you in on the “Targeted Objectives” which define the Goals themselves and move the organization one step closer to an action plan.

Just as in the Academy’s Strategic Plan, each “Strategic Goal” has a number of “Targeted Objectives”. Review the Alumni Association Strategic Plan here.

Upon approval of the Strategic Plan, the Alumni Board reorganized its working committees to align with the four Goals. Each committee has at least two board members as well as outside volunteers. Each committee has been tasked with developing its own action plans with specific tasks/steps that will be taken over the course of a year to improve both our organization and the Academy. For example, the Communications Committee, made up of current and former board members and other volunteers, is working to develop Alumni-centered information out to you. This third edition of the eNewsletter is evidence of those action plans being put into effect.

Take time to read these eNewsletters as they arrive on a bi-monthly basis! They will help you to better connect with other Alumni and the Academy.

Volunteering – David Witherill ’76

A year and a half ago you may vaguely recall filling out a Survey Monkey to help the Alumni Board develop the new Strategic Plan. Among numerous other questions we asked if you would be willing to volunteer your time to help either the Academy of the Board. Now we are asking again!

Those surveys were returned “blind” or anonymous so we have no way of knowing who is willing to volunteer. We had almost 700 surveys returned and almost 1/3 of them indicated that the respondent was willing to help. As we work on implementing the strategic plan there are all kinds of opportunities to strengthen both the college and the Alumni Association.  Please take a few minutes to read through the Strategic Goals and Targeted Objectives.

There will be all kinds of opportunities to help doing things like assisting in putting together social events  for alumni in your area, participating in Dining In (see above), developing mentor programming, working with board committees, lobbying and many others.  If interested in participating in any way, please contact the Alumni Relations Office at alumni@mma.edu. As a gift to alumni in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Maine Maritime Academy, all class yearbooks have been digitized and are now available online for viewing!

Each book in this collection is keyword-searchable and users can zoom into each page for easy reading.

We are happy to share these important chronicles of history with our Academy family.

Special thanks to the College Relations Office and Bryan Wolf, MMA Webmaster, for their hard work.
