Stephen W. Bailey ’43-2
died Friday, June 1, 2007, at Foothill Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Glendora, CA, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Topsham, Maine, February 9, 1924, the son of J. Harrison Bailey and Olive Bailey. He graduated from Hallowell High School and the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, thereafter making his home in California with his first wife Adele M. Bailey and two sons, Stephen Jr. and Michael D. Bailey. After discharge from the Merchant Marines, he worked for the Los Angeles Times from which he retired. He was a member of the American Legion Post of Hallowell, Maine.
Over the years Stephen maintained a close relationship with his family and friends from Maine. He always enjoyed visiting his home state and especially enjoyed the coast and eating Maine lobsters. He will always be remembered by his family as the “dancer” and the man with a great sense of humor.
He is survived by his second wife, Susan Bailey, of Glendora, CA, a son, Michael D. Bailey, of Nevada, his sister, Burtina Bailey Cole Thompson , of West Gardiner, Maine and several nieces and nephews. stepdaughter, Ann Laing, step-granddaughter, Laura Garciaros. He was predeceased by his first wife Adele Bailey, his son, Stephen Jr. Bailey, his sister, Alice Bailey Burns.
