Carlton L. Hutchins ’43-2

Carlton L. Hutchins, 97, passed away peacefully on Saturday October 3rd, 2020 at the Ramona Senior Manor in Ramona, California. He was born in 1923 in Kennebunk Maine, the son of Leroy and Frances Hutchins. He graduated from the 2nd class of the Maine Maritime Academy (1943) and entered the US Merchant and Naval service immediately after. Carlton served on active duty in WWII, the Korean and Vietnam War, retiring from the Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant Commander.

Carlton was married to Lucille Cash (Jack) and after their final Navy duty they eventually settled in Coronado, California. He started C.L. Hutchins Company, a custom house brokerage/shipping agency in San Diego and ran the company until his retirement. They moved back to Kennebunk after retirement.

He and Lucille had 3 children:  Peter, Jeffrey and Priscilla.  Carlton and Lucille loved RV traveling and took the kids across country to Maine on many summer vacations. He loved his Airstream trailers, Maine lobster, and barbequing.

After Lucille’s death in 2004 he moved back to California settling on Jeffrey’s family ranch in Ramona, where he enjoyed time with the cows and horses. Carlton always had a supply of organic apples for his favorite horse. He attended the First Congregational Church in Ramona where he loved listening to the youth choir.

Carlton is survived by his son Jeffrey and his wife Patricia. His daughter Priscilla and her husband Kim. He has 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Carlton will be interned, at a future date, with Lucille and Peter at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita, California.
