Carl F. Chavaree ’53

Carl Francis Chavaree passed away on August 4, 2015, after courageously enduring bladder cancer. Carl was born in Lewiston, Maine, on January 21, 1931, to Albert and Gertrude Chavaree. He was the third of nine children born to Albert and Gertrude. Carl attended the Maine Maritime Academy and graduated in 1953. It was while he was in the Navy that he met the love of his life, Helen Pauline Mersey. They married on October 4 1958.
He left the Navy and went to work for Exide Battery Co. During his years with Exide, Carl and Helen had 2 children, Lori and Kevin. The family eventually moved to California and Carl went back to sea, sailing with Military SeaLift Command. He would retire from MSC in 1996.

He was predeceased by his parents; and all but 1 sibling, and 2 grandchildren, Timothy and MaryJane Johnson. He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years; his brother, David; his 2 children, Lori (Greg) Johnson and Kevin (Laura) Chavaree; 3 grandchildren, Bryan (Heather) Johnson, Karina and Lily Chavaree; countless nieces, nephews and friends. Carl always had a smile on his face and a kind word to everyone he met. He will be greatly missed.
