Capt. George E. Smith ’56
George E. Smith ’56 died November 22, 2008 in Maine. After graduation from MMA, he served in the US Navy and Merchant Marine, rising to the rank of Master with Trans World Marine Corp., having held two commands with that company. In 1967, he became a Panama Canal Pilot, a position he held until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of Brooksville/Rosier (ME) Grange; Gov. Brooks IOOF Lodge in Brooksville; Ira Berry Masonic Lodge No. 128 in Blue Hill (ME); Hancock Masonic Lodge No. 4 in Castine; Scottish Rite Bodies in Portland; Anah Shrine Temple in Bangor. He was also a life member of the Boston Marine Society; Council of American Master Mariners as well as a member of the International Organization of Masters, Mates, and Pilots for 40 years. He is survived by his wife, Theodora, and a brother.
