Home-Schooled Applicants
The admissions office welcomes applications from students who have been home-schooled for some or all of their education. We recognize that home-schooling experiences vary, so we will work with you on a case-by-case basis. It will be to your advantage if your home-school curriculum meets or exceeds MMA’s established academic requirements. Supplementing your home-school curriculum with coursework at your local high school and/or community college will give us further evidence of your preparedness for academic success in a traditional college environment.
1.) Please be aware that to be eligible for U.S. Coast Guard licensing and/or federal financial aid, you must have either:
- a high school diploma issued by state, or
- a completed GED*, or
- a secondary school education in a homeschool setting that is treated as a homeschool under state law, and a homeschool completion credential.
You will need to provide evidence that you have met one of these qualifications for high school completion.
2.) Home-schooled students are required to submit the following application materials:
- Submission of The Common Application, including $50 application fee*
- Official transcripts for any academic work completed outside of your home-school program
- SAT Reasoning (MMA Code 3505) or ACT (MMA Code 1648) test scores.
- Teacher Evaluation form, preferably completed by someone other than your home-school coordinator if possible
- Proof of high school graduate or equivalency, as stated in 1. above
- Academic portfolio with a detailed description of the home-school curriculum (see 3. below)
Students may check their application status via the MMA Application Portal, using the Username, PIN and Custom Link provided once The Common Application has been received.
*We offer fee waivers for qualifying students, which means under some circumstances we will waive the $50 application fee for students with high financial need. You may request an application fee waiver through your Common Application online.
3.) If you do not participate in a home-school program that issues a transcript of work completed, you should provide a detailed portfolio of your curriculum to give the Admissions Committee a full sense of your academic background.
Your curriculum description should include a listing of the subjects you covered each year, a description of each course of study, and the major texts used or literature read. Grades received should be included, too, but if none are available, a narrative assessment of work and growth in each area is encouraged.
4.) We also strongly encourage home-schooled students to speak with a member of the Admissions Staff, so that we can help you to construct an application that will best represent you and your current abilities.
* The General Educational Development (GED) test is a four-subject high school equivalency test which, when passed, certify that the taker has American high-school level academic skills. The four subjects are Science, Social Studies, Mathematical Reasoning, and Reasoning Through Language Arts. After you pass the GED test, your diploma or credential will be issued by your state and you will receive a GED transcript to apply to college, start training, or get a better job. Beginning in 2014, Maine will offer the ETS high school equivalency test, known as HiSET™, which covers the same content areas as the current GED and allows test-takers to demonstrate proficiency of the academic skills expected by employers and post-secondary institutions.
Additional Information
Offer of Admission
All offers of admission are extended with the understanding that your record of academic achievement and personal conduct will remain at least at the level as when we reviewed an application. Maine Maritime Academy reserves the right to rescind an offer of admission if it is learned that subsequent academic performance or personal behavior are viewed to be substandard or inappropriate.
License Majors
Students enrolled in a USCG unlimited license major must be 18 years old prior to May 1st of their summer cruise.
Notice Regarding Changing of Majors
If admitted to MMA in a non-USCG license major, it may not be possible to switch to a USCG license major after enrolling. Unfortunately, MMA cannot guarantee a major change into a USCG license major after enrollment. If you have any questions, please call us to discuss.
Fraudulent Reporting
Applicants must provide accurate and complete information on all application documents. Intentional omission or falsification of information during the application process will result in the immediate rejection of the application. Application misrepresentation includes, but is not limited to: (1) false, omitted, or misleading information on the application, medical or immunization forms, financial aid disclosures or during the personal interview, (2) fake, forged, or altered transcripts, standardized test scores, or letters of recommendation.
Wait List Policy
Maine Maritime Academy strives to meet its academic enrollment goals each year. The college’s Office of Admissions acts on applications on a rolling basis until the goals for enrollment are met for the selected academic major or for the entire incoming class. Accordingly, candidates for admission are accepted each year in quantities that are based on an estimate of yield (the percentage of applicants who actually enroll). With this in mind, the college maintains a Wait List for those candidates who meet admission criteria, yet apply or deposit after program or enrollment capacity has been met. These candidates are offered placement on the Wait List. In the event that the yield falls short of projections, MMA will draw students from the Wait List to fill vacancies in the academic program or incoming class. Wait List FAQ
