What is Work-Study?
Work-study is a federal program based on financial need. It allows undergraduate and graduate students to work part- time to help pay for the cost of their education.
How do you receive it?
Federal work-study is awarded by the Financial Aid Office to students with financial need, as determined by the FAFSA each year. This can be on-campus or off-campus (Community Service Organization) employment. The amount on your award letter is an estimate of what you may earn for the entire academic year.
How do you get paid?
Before any student may work they must meet with the Student Payroll Office (Leavitt Hall) to complete an I-9 form, show two forms of identification (birth certificate, social security card, driver’s license, passport, etc.) and complete a direct deposit for (must have a copy of a check or bank documentation with routing number listed). This is a federal law and required of all students prior to receiving a paycheck.
You will be paid at least federal minimum wage and receive a bi-weekly paycheck from MMA. Wages are not credited to a student’s account.
Students may be paid through the federal work-study program (if eligible) or through regular wages. (Jobs are limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.)
If a student is not eligible for work-study or has used all their work-study dollars they may be paid with regular wage dollars. Regular wage comes from the department that is employing the student. Not all departments have a budget for regular wage and/or work-study.
It is the responsibility of the student to seek out their own employment.
