🎓 What a day to celebrate at Maine Maritime Academy!

Today we honored the Class of 2025 during Commencement, recognized outstanding achievement at the Academic Awards Ceremony, and celebrated the commissioning of our newest officers at the NROTC Ceremony.

We were proud to ...welcome Congressman Jared Golden as our Commencement speaker. He encouraged graduates to “find your purpose” and reminded them that Maine Maritime Academy has given them a leg up in discovering their mission.

Our graduates leave here with the knowledge, resilience, and confidence to thrive—wherever their journey takes them.

Congratulations, Mariners! 🌊⚓ #MMA2025 #Commencement #LeadershipAtSeaAndBeyond #MarinerPride #BeYourHero #MarinersForever

Today’s Summer Sea Term student leadership highlight features Kelland Theil ’26 from Albuquerque, New Mexico. While on campus, Midshipman Theil serves as the Regimental Senator, acting as a liaison between the Regiment and the rest of the student body. He also plays first violin in the MMA ...String Ensemble and serves as a member of the Castine Fire Rescue Department.

🔹 What are you looking forward to this summer?
I am looking forward to being at sea again and further developing my skills as both a mariner and a leader. Summer cruise is an incredible opportunity and one of the highlights of the unlimited license program. I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned at the Academy so far. Additionally, I’m very excited to work with Texas A&M and gain experience on a different ship.

🔹What is the one thing you wish someone had told you before your first summer sea term?
I wish someone had told me to be patient, take every opportunity to learn and grow, and keep an open mind. Summer cruise is what you make of it, and I believe going in with a positive attitude and an open mind will make the experience all the more enjoyable, especially with so many dynamic factors for this year's cruise.

🔹 Which port are you most excited to visit, and why?
I am looking forward to Belfast, Northern Ireland. There are a lot of great sites to visit and the city has an extensive maritime history.

🔹 Why did you apply for a ship rate position, and what do you hope to learn?
I applied for a ship rate position because I want to contribute to a positive shipboard experience and further grow as a leader. In my positions, I hope to learn more about effectively leading a multi-organizational team and how to teach in an engaging and helpful manner.

Summer Training Cruises are a core part of the experience for students enrolled in majors with an Unlimited USCG License—including Marine Engineering Operations, Marine Engineering Technology, Marine Systems Engineering (5-year), and Marine Transportation Operations. These cruises offer a firsthand look at shipboard life and provide essential hands-on training.
