The MMA Alumni Association, Ed Gagnon ’78

What the MMA Alumni Association Offers:

As graduates of Maine Maritime Academy (MMA), alumni are offered unique services to assist in their professional careers as well as the means to stay in touch with classmates, other alumni, administration staff, and instructors.  MMA provides the following benefits to all our alumni:

  • Invitations to area events and activities.
  • Updates on what is happening on campus and with classmates through the Mariner magazine and Shipmate e-newsletter.
  • Professional support through our Career Services Office. The Career Center is available to students and alumni as a tool to search for jobs, post résumés, and utilize a vast library of employment resources. Employers may also post jobs and search résumés.
  • Discounted tuition for enrollment in the Loeb-Sullivan School of Business & Logistics graduate programs.
  • Use of the Wyman House, home of MMA’s Alumni Association and the Advancement Department. This newly renovated building is available for meetings, cookouts, and other special events. For more information or to reserve the space, please contact the Alumni Relations office at alumni@mma.edu.
  • The Academy has full-time staff dedicated to supporting the alumni in the Alumni Relations office. Karen Cukierski and Jeff Wright work closely with the Alumni Association and coordinate the outreach activities to all our alumni.

In addition to the benefits, MMA provides the following services:

  • Secure academic transcripts, provided by the Registrar’s Office. A fee is required for this service.
  • Professional Development opportunities through Maine Maritime Academy’s Center for Professional Mariner Development.
  • Assistance in area event planning
  • On-campus Conference and Event Services support. The Office of Conference Services specializes in banquets, conferences, meetings, retreats, and youth camps, and can coordinate day or overnight events in Castine. Alumni are also welcome to stay in Leavitt Hall guest rooms. For costs and availability, please contact Rachael Cotoni at 207-326-2283.
  • The latest in MMA apparel, swag, and gifts at the MMA Bookstore.

There are many other ways to stay connected, and we encourage you to try them all:

  • Submit Alumni and/or Class Notes when you have news to share. We’d love to know about your new job, a promotion, or personal updates like a recent marriage or the arrival of a new baby.
  • Contact your Class Agent. The Class Agent serves as a peer-to-peer liaison and can help you connect with MMA, classmates, and other alumni. A Class Agent is a volunteer from your class who is a point of contact between you, your classmates, and the Academy.  Not every class has a class agent and we encourage you to consider volunteering.  Are you being contacted by your Class Agent?
  • Attend an upcoming alumni event. Events happen all around the country and are a great way to meet MMA grads in your area.
  • Contribute to and read what other alumni are doing in our Alumni Perspectives section of the website.
  • Also remember to keep the Academy updated with new contact information when you move, retire, change jobs or just change your email address.  The Alumni Relations office will get the records updated.

Are you interested in getting involved?  MMA welcomes any amount of time you can give:

  • Plan or attend an event.
    • There are opportunities to connect with fellow alumni in Castine or in your community through regional alumni chapters and groups.
  • Cheer on our teams.
    • Our Mariners Athletics teams compete on campuses throughout New England. Invite area alumni to join you to watch games in person or stream them live.
  • Volunteer at upcoming events.
    • Events are made possible thanks to the enthusiastic support and generosity of our committed alumni volunteers.
  • Become a Class Agent.
    • Class agents serve as peer-to-peer liaisons and maintain communication with classmates, the Academy, and other alumni. We can never have too many Class Agents. Are you receiving communications from your Class Agent(s)?
  • Become a Blue and Gold ambassador
    • Through participation, support, and assistance in the recruitment process, alumni best position Maine Maritime Academy to maintain its tradition of excellence. Assist MMA admissions by recommending qualified prospects, conducting area interviews, participating in recruiting events, and hosting area receptions. Your involvement will help us recruit the next generation of students at Maine Maritime Academy!
  • Plan a summer reunion.
    • Summer reunions offer a unique bonding experience for classmates and friends. A great reunion requires thoughtful planning to bring together a wide range of ideas and interests. The Alumni Office will provide support throughout the planning process and looks forward to hosting you and your fellow alumni in Castine! Contact alumni@mma.edu.
  • Join your local alumni chapter.
    • See old classmates, make new friends, and learn what’s happening at MMA by connecting with regional alumni chapters and groups in your area<. If there isn’t a chapter in your area, we can help you set one up. For more information, contact the Alumni Relations office.
  • Consider a seat on the Alumni Board.
    • Your participation will help support our mission and strengthen the alumni community. If you’re curious, learn more about Board Member Expectations by contacting the Alumni Relations office.
  • Join an Alumni Committee.
    • Your participation will support ongoing work in the areas of communication, alumni involvement, financial support, and work with other entities. The impact of this committee work is immeasurable and does not require board member status.
  • For more volunteer information or event assistance, contact Alumni Relations at alumni@mma.edu.

Did you know most of the MMA yearbooks are now online?  If you lost yours and want to look at your yearbook, you can view them on the Alumni web pages.

Maine Maritime Academy provides many benefits and opportunities to all our alumni. Those opportunities did not end on our graduation day. We have the ability to stay in touch with classmates and to give back to current students our experiences and knowledge about industries that MMA helped prepare us for.  The benefits and services we have talked about are just a sample of the opportunities that are available to all alumni. Please reach out to Karen and Jeff at alumni@mma.edu.
