MMA Alumni Host Assistant Prof. Jain At Nassco
By Xenon Alidag, Communications Specialist, NASSCO
In early January 2013, Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) Assistant Professor Navneet Jain completed a two-week visit to
the General Dynamics NASSCO Shipyard in San Diego, CA. The visit was made possible through an invitation extended
by MMA Alumni working at NASSCO to impart valuable information about modern trends and work processes in the
shipbuilding industry that may enhance the learning experience of current and future students of Maine Maritime
Academy.
On his arrival at NASSCO, Jain was welcomed by former MMA students, including NASSCO President Fred Harris
`67. Aside from receiving a comprehensive tour of the NASSCO shipyard and facilities, Jain met with representatives
from various departments to discuss the requirements of their jobs and observe how their work contributes to the overall
operations of the company. The meetings provided Jain with an opportunity to obtain a better understanding of how
the concepts of engineering management, supply chain management, cost reduction/continuous process Improvement,
planning and earned value management, quality management and program management work together and play an
important role in the shipbuilding process.
"I really have an appreciation of what NASSCO and shipbuilding is about," said Mr. Jain toward the end of his visit to
NASSCO, mentioning that some of the areas of interest that may be considered for educating students at MMA would
include promoting opportunities for students to become acquainted with activities requiring team and cross-functional
work, project management and metrics.
