Darrell W. Donahue
Research Director, Center for Applied Research and Education
Darrell Donahue joined the MMA staff in the summer of 2012 after
working at University of Maine for 17+ years. His last appointment at the
University of Maine was as professor and associate director of the Forest
and Bio-Products Research Initiative in the Department of Chemical and
Biological Engineering. He was drawn to the newly-created position at
MMA by the opportunity to build a research program from the "ground
up." In an interview, he said, "Since being here, I have learned a lot about
maritime industries and that has been a cool outcome of coming here."
Donohue has been a highly active researcher but also teacher and mentor
throughout his career. His fellowship at the American Association for the
Advancement of Science, Department of Homeland Security, uniquely
positions him to help MMA's researchers; and his years as a mentor of
students in his research lab will benefit all the MMA students he mentors.
Additionally, he has been a volunteer for many organizations, but most
especially, for the Boy Scouts of America where he has been actively
involved in training, development, and leadership. He has many refereed
publications on topics as diverse as "Healthy Animals, Healthy Canada:
The Expert Panel on Approaches to Animal Health Risk Assessment" and
"Scientific Criteria to Ensure Safe Food." Finally, he has
given many professional presentations at conferences
and has written several successful grants for his research
over the years. His expertise in engineering, economic
