{"id":417,"date":"2019-03-06T13:15:54","date_gmt":"2019-03-06T13:15:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mainemaritime.edu\/waterfront\/?p=417"},"modified":"2019-03-06T13:15:54","modified_gmt":"2019-03-06T13:15:54","slug":"week-of-february-25-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mainemaritime.edu\/waterfront\/bowdoin-hull-replacement\/week-of-february-25-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Week of February 25, 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tall Ships America held its annual conference in Los Angeles California this week and with six current students, four alumni, and two previous Captains of the <em>Bowdoin <\/em>in attendance, Maine Maritime Academy was well represented!\u00a0Rear Admiral Mark Buzby, Administrator of the United States Maritime Administration (MARAD), opened the conference with remarks that highlighted the importance of specialized sail training and the development of a skilled and diverse workforce to meet America\u2019s needs. \u00a0In many ways, <em>Bowdoin<\/em> represents the epitome of his words, having provided hands-on educational experiences for hundreds of students and crew that now serve aboard vessels in the US Merchant Marine fleet.<\/p>\n<p>While the conference was going on in LA, the shipwrights in Boothbay Harbor were busy making repairs that will allow the <em>Bowdoin<\/em> to continue the 98-year tradition of training young people at sea.\u00a0 The installation of six futtock sections was completed and the yard received a shipment of white oak boards that will make up the vessel\u2019s new bottom planking.
