To the crew and cadets of the TS State of Maine, it is a reminder that we are almost home. That foghorn is the same one we heard throughout the night and then day on our very first days at sea post-Castine.<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">When I first heard its bellowing call six weeks ago, it filled me with giddy excitement for what lies ahead. Now, I have perfected the art of timing the horn so I may dodge its <\/span><span class=\"s2\">ear-piercing<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">call<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">Last night, dense fog rolled in over the north Atlantic, activating TSSOM\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"s2\">foghorn. That means, today,<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> my skills have been put to the test<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. I must say\u2026<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">I passed with flying colors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\">\u200b<span class=\"s2\">Today<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> is our final day at sea before we pull into our final foreign port of St. John\u2019s, Newfoundland. The ship is bustling with energy and excitement. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">I am excited to try moose meat sausage, and authentic Tim Horton\u2019s coffee. It is projected to be in the mid <\/span><span class=\"s2\">60s <\/span><span class=\"s2\">during our stay, but that is welcomed after the searing temperatures of the Mediterranean\u2019s summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s2\">Alpha,<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">Charlie<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, and Delta<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> companies are busy studying and preparing<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">(in their free time<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> of course)<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> for their final engine and deck exams. All 4\/C regardless of major, and all 2\/C engineering major students, will be participating in an exam informally known as \u201cflashlights\u201d. This exam requires students to walk down to the engine room, be assigned a system within the engine room, and then are given questions to answer by training officers. For instance, if I were assigned the Central Fresh <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Water, a cooling<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> system (a large loop of water tasked with cooling many important components of the engine room), they may ask me about what the system is for, how it <\/span><span class=\"s2\">interacts<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">with<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> other systems, and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">for <\/span><span class=\"s2\">what<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> each<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> individual component of the system <\/span><span class=\"s2\">is<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> intended<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\">\u200b<span class=\"s2\">Officially, all companies are at work. Alpha company is on Utility, cleaning handrails and then getting some <\/span><span class=\"s2\">well-earned<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> rest. Bravo company is on Maintenance, repairing the many various things that may go wrong on a several decade old ship. Charlie <\/span><span class=\"s2\">company is on Watch, ensuring that no oil touches the engine room floor, and no ship on the fog-laden horizon goes unreported.
