Dean Thao or Campus Safety staff will contact the ship and have the individual call back.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To reach someone aboard the vessel, please provide the following information:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Your name<\/li>\n<li>Your contact information<\/li>\n<li>The name of the person you need to speak with on the ship<\/li>\n<li>Your relationship to that person<\/li>\n<li>The nature of the emergency<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This information will be communicated by Campus Safety or Dean Thao to the Commandant of Midshipmen; he will then discreetly arrange for your student to call you back. Please note that this process may take a few hours, depending on the location of the ship and the time of day.<\/p>\n<h3>Communication<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mainemaritime.edu\/tssom-training-cruise-blog\/\" data-outlook-id=\"1b1f17d3-78e4-48db-90f3-7adbff8a4715\">Cruise Blog<\/a>\u00a0is the most important hub of communication for family and friends to receive updates about cruise. Blog posts will chronicle the progress of the ship, allowing parents and friends access to a chart of the TSSOM\u2019s course, a summary of activities, activity highlights, stats (latitude and longitude, speed, passage distance, etc), weather, and pictures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Updates to the site happen at various times and are provided by students, faculty, and staff. If there are technical difficulties or other disruptions, updates may be delayed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please note: this blog site does not support commenting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Training Cruise Manual<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Training Cruise Manual (Cadet Ship Operations Manual) covers everything from discipline to the daily routine, watch position description, and meal hours. The Training Cruise Manual is available to students on this website and will be available onboard. Students are required to read the Cadet Ship Operations Manual and will sign an acknowledgement form before boarding.<\/p>\n<h3>Money<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students should bring money or credit cards for use in the ship\u2019s store (which accepts cash as well as credit\/debit cards), for excursions ashore (these are subsidized so that students don\u2019t have to spend more than $25 per excursion and can be paid for in the ship\u2019s store as described above), and for souvenirs ashore. There are currency exchanges or banks ashore at which they can convert paper money.<\/p>\n<h3>Phone Calls<\/h3>\n<p>Students do have the ability to make calls home while the ship is underway, utilizing a satellite app they can download to their phones. There is a small fee associated with this service, and it can only be used by the student to make outgoing calls while the ship is underway between ports. When the ship is in port, the student can use their regular mobile service to both make and receive calls; if your provider offers an international plan, you may wish to explore purchasing that for the duration of the cruise. The ship does have dedicated satellite phones that can be used to call home in an emergency situation (please see the \u201cFrequently Asked Questions\u201d portion of the site for more information).<\/p>\n<h3>Letters from Home<\/h3>\n<p>Port mailing addresses are available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/mainemaritime.edu\/tssom-training-cruise-blog\/port-information\/\">Port Information<\/a> page.<\/p>\n<h3>Email<\/h3>\n<p>Email will be used for text communication only. Students will not be able to send or receive attachments. If a student needs to receive an attachment, please have them coordinate with the Office on the TSSOM. Student email addresses are in this format: first.last@mma.edu. Additional information is available on the <a title=\"https:\/\/mainemaritime.edu\/tssom-training-cruise-blog\/email-tips\/\" href=\"https:\/\/mainemaritime.edu\/tssom-training-cruise-blog\/email-tips\/\" data-outlook-id=\"5d1056ed-d9d2-4610-8a22-901b0d11e771\">Email Tips<\/a> page.<\/p>\n<h3>Alcohol Use<\/h3>\n<p>Alcohol is prohibited on board the ship. The policy aboard the ship is consistent with that of the US Coast Guard and can be found in the Training Cruise Manual. Students may be asked to submit to a breathalyzer test if it is suspected that they are intoxicated. If a student or staff\/crew member refuses to submit to a breathalyzer test, they will be sent home. The cost to come home from a port with no notice due to a disciplinary matter can exceed $5,000. Additionally, the student receives no refund for cruise and must repeat the entire cruise. This kind of mistake can cost over $10,000.<\/p>\n<h3>Packing &amp; Tools<\/h3>\n<p>All students enrolled in Marine Engineering Operations, Marine Engineering Technology, Marine Systems Engineering, and Marine Transportation Operations on the annual training cruise are required to have a tool kit.
