Maine Maritime Academy\u2019s annual Memorial Rededication Ceremony will be held on\u00a0Friday, October 10, 2025, at 4:30 p.m.<\/strong>\u00a0The memorial plaza, located behind the Alfond Student Center, includes a ship\u2019s naval gun and a granite monument with a plaque listing MMA alumni lost at sea, gifted by the Classes of 1949 and 1962. This year\u2019s event will be carried out by the\u00a0Regiment of Midshipmen<\/a>\u00a0and focused on those alumni who lost their lives while serving at sea.<\/p>\n

As part of the ceremony, members of the Regiment of Midshipmen of the Class of 2029 will be charged by the Commandant, Captain Justin Cooper, with carrying on the tradition of annual recognition and with ensuring the continued respect of the memorial as hallowed ground.<\/p>\n

The 50-caliber gun was used to train midshipmen for World War II and has resided on campus ever since. The naval gun is a tangible symbol of why MMA was founded and a reminder that the Merchant Marine is subject to mobilization to augment the active-duty force in time of war.<\/p>\n
