Catherine Mahoney, a Marine Science\/SVO sophomore, will be working with Ocean Studies Professor LeAnn Whitney this summer at Bigelow Laboratories in Boothbay, ME. Cat and Prof. Whitney\u00a0will be investigating the ability of phytoplankton to use different forms of phosphorus to support growth. Phytoplankton are microscopic, photosynthetic organisms that produce nearly half of the oxygen we breath. Understanding the bioavailability of different forms of phosphorus to different organisms can help predict phytoplankton community composition of future oceans.
