\nUpper Level<\/h3>\nThe circulating collection is located on the Library’s upper level. It begins in the Chart Room and continues into the main area upstairs. The online catalog displays the location \u201cMain\u201d before the call number for books in the circulating collection.<\/p>\n
Books are arranged on the shelves by call number according to the Library of Congress classification system<\/a>. Several posters located throughout the library explain the subject classifications used in this system, and staff will be happy to help you find specific books or to direct you to books on a particular subject.<\/p>\n
\nPeriodicals<\/a>
\nMain Level | Lower Level | Online<\/h3>\nThousands of full-text journals are available online<\/a> through the Library\u2019s website. Current issues of print journals, magazines and newspapers are shelved on the main level. Backfiles (past issues) of print periodicals are housed on the lower level, arranged alphabetically by title. Periodicals on microfiche and microfilm are kept in the basement along with a microform reader and scanner. Print periodicals cannot be checked out, but you are welcome to copy or scan the content you need.<\/p>\n

Course Reserves<\/a>
\nMain Level – Help Desk<\/h3>\nInstructors\u00a0may opt to place textbooks, videos, and other course materials on reserve so that students may use them in the Library. Reserve\u00a0materials are shelved\u00a0at the Library Help Desk by course code and are for in-Library use only unless otherwise designated by the instructor. Borrowers must present a photo ID to use reserve materials; your ID will be held at the desk while you are using a reserve item. Reserve DVDs can be watched on any of the Library’s computers, in the seminar room on our upper level, or on the TV on our lower level.<\/p>\n
Also available at the Help Desk for use in the Library are supplies including USB drives, iPads, headphones, and calculators.<\/p>\n

\nMain Level<\/h3>\nThe reference collection is located on the main level. Reference materials include handbooks, encyclopedias, manuals, directories, and statistical sources. \nUpper Level – Chart Room<\/h3>\nThe library has a large cartographic collection from the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency and the National Ocean Survey. Maps and charts of the world and of the territorial waters of the U.S. are kept on the upper level in the Chart Room.\u00a0Maps and charts are for use in the Library only and cannot be checked out.<\/p>\n

\nMain Level<\/h3>\nThe library\u2019s Special Collections are shelved in cases around the main level. Areas of strength are maritime history, Maine history, and World War II. Non-print Materials<\/a><\/h3>\nThe Library’s holdings include DVDs and CDs, located on the second floor. Students and staff may borrow DVDs for one week; faculty may borrow DVDs for four weeks.<\/p>\n
