Todd Cooper ’97

Major at MMA: Marine Transportation
Extracurricular involvement while at MMA: Yacht Club
Employer: Port Everglades Pilots Association

Where has your career taken you since graduation?

I started out as an AB on the MV Strong Virginian and continued sailing deep sea for the next 15 years as a licensed deck officer with AMO eventually sailing as Master of the SS Cornhusker State.

What is your current title and what are your responsibilities?

Today I am a Co-Managing Pilot at Port Everglades Pilots Association. Port Everglades is one of the top three busiest cruise ports in the world and the largest fuel depot in Florida. It serves thousands of vessels every year. As a pilot I provide the expertise for a safe and efficient transit to and from the port.

What piece of advice would you give to a student going into your field?

Set your goals high and dream big. With a great education from MMA you will have the foundation for a successful career. All you have to do is study hard and work harder.

How did the MMA experience prepare you for both your prior positions and your current career focus?

Choosing Maine Maritime was the best decision I’ve ever made. The education I received there has led to much of my success in the workplace.

What are your goals for the future?

I am living my dreams every day. I have a successful career, a loving wife (also an MMA graduate), and family. My goal now is to “pay it forward” and share my experiences with others and mentor children and young adults down the path to success.
