MMA wins lifeboat races and seamanship challenge.<\/h2>\n

With a clean sweep, Maine Maritime Academy midshipmen won the George C. Previll Memorial Inaugural Inter-Academy Monomoy Challenge on September 8, hosted by SUNY Maritime Academy in Throggs Neck, New York.<\/p>\n

In addition to MMA, competing teams included the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy of Kings Point, New York; U.S. Coast Guard Academy of New London, Connecticut; SUNY Maritime Academy, and Massachusetts Maritime Academy of Buzzards Bay.<\/p>\n

The competition began with a head-to-head monomoy (rescue row boat) race in round-robin format on a 1\/3-mile course. MMA brought two boat teams, each consisting of 10 participants\u2014a flag bearer, eight rowers, and a coxswain\u2014that handily bested the fleet.<\/p>\n

In an email to MMA President, Bill Brennan,\u00a0MARAD Administrator, Rear Admiral Mark H. Buzby, USN, Ret. said, \u201cWhenever your boat was in competition, there was a bone in her teeth and a frothy wake astern. Most impressive.<\/p>\n

\u201cEqually impressive was the performance of your folks in the Seamanship competition, which they also captured.\u201d<\/p>\n

This portion of the competition challenged skills in a knot-tying relay, heaving line-toss for accuracy and distance, and 200-meter timed lifeboat rescue.<\/p>\n

MMA walked away with a beautiful plaque and $4,000 in scholarship money; $2,500 for winning the monomoy race and $1,500 for the seamanship challenge.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are obviously preparing well-rounded future ship\u2019s officers in Castine,\u201d said Buzby. \u201cWe need them!\u201d<\/p>\n

The race was presented by The Marine Society of the City of New York, whose partner sponsors included the Boston Marine Society and Portland Marine Society.<\/p>\n
