{"id":51,"date":"2019-03-09T18:24:59","date_gmt":"2019-03-09T18:24:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mainemaritime.edu\/mariner\/shipmate-march-2019\/?p=51"},"modified":"2019-03-18T22:48:09","modified_gmt":"2019-03-18T22:48:09","slug":"marad-budget-bodes-well-for-new-training-ship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mainemaritime.edu\/mariner\/shipmate-march-2019\/article\/marad-budget-bodes-well-for-new-training-ship\/","title":{"rendered":"MARAD Budget Bodes Well for New Training Ship"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>MARAD Budget Bodes Well for New Training Ship<\/h1>\n<h2>An open letter from President Brennan<\/h2>\n<p>Dear Maine Maritime Academy Community,<\/p>\n<p>As you may know, a number of appropriations bills were finalized in January to keep the Government open and operating.\u00a0One of those bills was the Transportation Appropriations Bill, which provides support to the State Maritime Academies through the Maritime Administration (MARAD) budget.<\/p>\n<p>This MARAD budget is truly historic in terms of the support provided to the State Maritime Academies. The total provided this year is $45.2 million, which is close to a 212 percent increase over the past 10 years in federal funding that translates into direct support for the colleges, for the students, and maintenance and repair of the training ships, including fuel support for the annual cruise. I am particularly pleased to report that the budget just submitted by the President for Fiscal Year 2021 includes funding for the third ship in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maritime.dot.gov\/national-security\/nsmv-%E2%80%93-national-security-multi-mission-vessels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Security Multi-mission Vessel<\/a> (NSMV) program to replace the aging fleet of training ships with purpose-built modern vessels.
