Bowdoin Crew Reunion & Update

A 10-year reunion celebrates an epic voyage to Greenland and news of the schooner’s rebuild.

It was late May in 2008 when the schooner Bowdoin departed Castine for the Bowdoin’s 26th voyage into Arctic waters. The 33-day cruise marked the third time Bowdoin sailed north of the Arctic Circle since the vessel became one of Maine Maritime Academy’s training vessels in 1989.

The 16 berths were filled with students, faculty and staff from MMA, with the exception of the steward who was hired crew.

The cruise included port stops in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and Greenland ports of Nuuk (capital), Ilulissat, Sisimiut and Qeqertarsuatsiaat.

Bowdoin reached 70° 22’ N latitude before turning south for the long passage home.
