Virus Diary: Mariner Stuck Halfway Around the World

Sean O’Connor ’16 boarded a vessel in January and expected to be home in April, but the pandemic left him unable to leave ship and dockside in Singapore for months.

Being stuck had its tense moments, but there was good camaraderie, reported a Portland Press Herald article. “We… hoped it would be a temporary arrangement.”

Upon finally making it home in mid-June, O’Connor celebrated with a multi-day canoe trip with his family.

This was the norm in the bygone days. My first tour had me sailing for 13 months. Then 2 months off for vacation (and marriage) and right back to Sea for another 13 months. At another time a couple of years later it was a 10 month tour of duty with only 8 hours off the ship…other than just to the dock.
