{"id":260,"date":"2018-12-16T15:04:27","date_gmt":"2018-12-16T15:04:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mainemaritime.edu\/mariner\/issue3-2018\/?p=260"},"modified":"2019-01-03T22:59:31","modified_gmt":"2019-01-03T22:59:31","slug":"choose-your-heading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mainemaritime.edu\/mariner\/issue3-2018\/campus-currents\/choose-your-heading\/","title":{"rendered":"Choose Your Heading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"subCategory\">Special Events<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>Choose Your Heading<\/h1>\n<h2>Women on the Water conference connects cadets with professionals.<\/h2>\n<p>MMA hosted the 10th Annual Women on the Water Conference in partnership with the Maritime Administration (MARAD) on November 1-3.<\/p>\n<p>The three-day event provided attendees the opportunity to meet with and learn from industry leaders, maritime professionals, and fellow students and academy representatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conference was a great networking opportunity for mariners at all stages of their careers,\u201d says event director Elizabeth True, Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. This year\u2019s theme was \u201cChoose Your Heading\u201d to encourage female maritime students to consider the many options available to them for careers in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Some 190 participants from across the country, Canada and Norway attended the conference. The 95 student participants came from the seven U.S. maritime academies and six Canadian institutions.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p>This year\u2019s program workshops highlighted the many options open for female maritime students to consider.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis conference adds so much value in that it bridges the gap between women in the industry with the female cadets of the maritime academies,\u201d says panelist and USMMA alumna Ally Cedeno, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/WomenOffshore.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WomenOffshore.org<\/a> and Senior Dynamic Positioning Operator with Transocean Company. \u201cIt\u2019s also an opportunity to meet [professional] women who are making waves and for those women to network, as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"videoBox\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ukdQfD_cnwg?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div class=\"videoCaption\" style=\"padding-bottom: 0;\">\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Enjoy a video of the presenters and participants from the conference.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Workshops included: 1) Bringing Your Career Ashore; 2) Knowing Your Options \u2013 Union\/Non-Union, Government; 3) Achieving Work\/Life Balance with a Maritime Career; 4) Offshore Oil and Gas Careers; 5) Panel discussions on career options for maritime engineers, being a harbor pilot, and options for limited license captains; and 6) Change versus Transition \u2013 Ship to Shore to Ship. Thirteen panelists were MMA alumni at various stages of their careers. There were also exhibits by sponsoring companies, mock interview sessions for cadets with industry professionals and two networking receptions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve attended at least eight of these conferences,\u201d says Capt. Deborah Dempsey \u201976, the first female maritime academy graduate in an unlimited license program. \u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful opportunity for cadets to get to know and form mentorships with successful women in the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dempsey recently retired as the first female Columbia River Bar Pilot, in a long career that included many notable \u201cfirsts.\u201d She was a keynote speaker at the conference in addition to Rear Admiral Mark H. Buzby, USN (Ret.), Maritime Administrator for MARAD.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI left the conference with newfound confidence in pursuing a career in the maritime industry,\u201d says Mary Shea, a marine systems engineering major and president of MMA\u2019s Women on the Water club. \u201cI\u2019ve since been in contact with many mariners I met at the conference, and this network provides backbone for that This year\u2019s theme was \u201cChoose Your Heading\u201d to encourage female maritime students to consider the many options available to them for careers in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Some 190 participants from across the country, Canada and Norway attended the conference.
