{"id":200,"date":"2018-12-14T19:13:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-14T19:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mainemaritime.edu\/mariner\/issue3-2018\/?p=200"},"modified":"2018-12-17T00:43:28","modified_gmt":"2018-12-17T00:43:28","slug":"memorial-plaza-dedicated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mainemaritime.edu\/mariner\/issue3-2018\/alumni-news\/memorial-plaza-dedicated\/","title":{"rendered":"Memorial Plaza Dedicated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"subCategory\">Spotlight<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>Memorial Plaza Dedicated<\/h1>\n<p>It was a bright, early morning event, a small gathering of alumni, families and friends, a pause that quietly punctuated the Homecoming weekend.<br \/>\nA memorial sponsored by the Class of 1962, commemorating MMA alumni who gave their lives serving their country or were lost at sea, was dedicated on September 28.<br \/>\nThe eight-foot-wide granite monument is engraved with the names of 43 alumni and overlooks a new plaza behind the Alfond Student Center that also features a 3\u201d\/50 caliber gun, donated by the class of 1949, upon which early academy classes trained before shipping out to war.<\/p>\n<p>President Bill Brennan noted \u201cthis memorial space is significant as an accessible place where we can come together and remember.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel it fitting to honor our alumni who served as officers and crew aboard the <em>El Faro<\/em> as they are, sadly, those we lost most recently,\u201d said Brennan. \u201cI am personally thankful to have some of their families here with us today.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"videoBox memorial\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pJ76FAZ4c6I?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div class=\"videoCaption memorial\" style=\"padding-bottom: 0;\">\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Watch a brief video of the ceremony.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The MMA Honor Guard provided a 21-gun salute, and there was a moment of silence. Positioned down the hill from the memorial, regimental company officer, Lt. Kyle Willette played <em>Amazing Grace<\/em> on the bagpipes.<\/p>\n<p>Class of \u201962 representative Doug Scott then thanked the academy \u201cfor allowing us to take on this project as a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of our graduation.
