We partnered with Winslow Technology Group because they offer a great discount, and great service, to students and their families. That said, participation in the program is <strong>purely optional.\u00a0<\/strong>If purchasing from another source or bringing a computer you already own, here are the minimum specifications your laptop should meet:<\/p>\n<h3>OPERATING SYSTEM<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Windows 10 or 11<\/li>\n<li>MacOS 10.13 or higher <em>(must be able to run Microsoft Remote Desktop from App Store)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>NOT<\/strong> Chrome OS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>HARD DRIVE<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>At least a 256 Gigabyte (GB) hard drive.<\/li>\n<li>Consider a Solid State Drive. Way faster, much more durable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>RAM<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A minimum of 8 Gigabyte (GB) of RAM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>JUMP\/THUMB\/FLASH USB DRIVE<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Some type of removable storage media is strongly recommended.\u00a0 These drives are available at virtually every computer box store as well as office supply store and are used for saving and transferring data from school computers to the student\u2019s laptop and back.\u00a0 These drives cost between $15 and $90, depending on the amount of storage purchased.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>PRINTER<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider the cost of consumables (ink cartridges, toner) and ease-of-use when choosing a printer. Wireless printers are compatible, but using a USB cable eliminates having to search a giant list of printers when trying to print (and is more secure). Limited printing is available in the Library, Curtis Hall, ABS, and Dismukes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>WARRANTY SERVICES<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>We strongly recommend the purchase of warranty service (up to five years if available)\u00a0<strong>that includes accidental damage<\/strong> from the laptop manufacturer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>LAPTOP FAQ\u2019s:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>My financial aid paperwork said that I have an expense for a computer. Per the Financial Aid office, the notice is only there to advise you on the potential total cost of your education.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Do I really need to buy a warranty with my computer?<\/h3>\n<p>While they can be expensive initially, a warranty can save you from incurring costs from damaged equipment should the worst happen.\u202f Dropping a computer can sometimes cause hundreds of dollars in damage, far more than the cost of the warranty<span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Do I need an Antivirus?\u202f If so, which one should I get?<\/h3>\n<p>You will need an antivirus in order to use Maine Maritime Academy\u2019s networks.\u202f Which antivirus should you choose?\u202f Windows Defender comes with Windows 10 at no extra cost and works just fine.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that most paid antivirus programs work on a yearly subscription platform, so if you buy it this year you\u2019ll have to buy it again next year and the year after that.<\/p>\n<p>Also remember that the antivirus that came on your computer might be a\u00a030 or 60 day\u00a0trial, so check that out before coming to school.\u202f If it is a trial, you\u2019ll need to decide if you want to buy it and keep using it or replace it with something else.<\/p>\n<h3>I\u2019m an incoming Freshman and my computer is acting\u00a0weird,\u00a0can you fix it for me?<\/h3>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">Once the school year begins, all student may bring their computers to the Help Desk, located in the basement of Leavitt Hall for service.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>[Some application] is acting weird\/not doing what it\u2019s supposed to, can you fix it?<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We can try.\u202f Maine Maritime Academy employs a number of student workers to assist students with software issues, including reinstalling Windows.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>My computer was damaged and needs new parts, what do I do?<\/h3>\n<p>Maine Maritime Academy is a Dell Certified Depot Center and is authorized to service Dell Latitude series computer hardware (provided they have a valid Dell depot warranty or better).\u202f The student will need to bring the damaged computer to the IT Shop in the basement of Leavitt Hall for diagnosis and repair.<\/p>\n<p>MMA\u2019s technical services for other student computers is limited to student technicians who are trained to troubleshoot basic hardware problems and assist students in setting up service calls for hardware repair.\u202fSome vendors require that laptops be shipped back to the factory, while others require that laptops be taken to the nearest authorized service center<span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Choose your vendor and service level carefully for the best experience in case of trouble.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Many vendors offer on-site service for their products \u2013 here is how it works.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Student calls vendor with a description of their problem, if required \u2013 vendor arranges for on-site service.\u202f Vendor ships needed parts to their contracted service personnel.<\/li>\n<li>Contracted service personnel receive parts and contact the student to\u00a0make arrangements\u00a0to service computer at MMA.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If your warranty is expired, you may work with the student technicians regarding where to purchase replacement parts and when they (the student technicians) can install them for you.<\/p>\n<h3>I want to back my data up somewhere, what should I do?<\/h3>\n<p>Protecting your data is important.\u00a0Students at MMA have access to Microsoft OneDrive and are given 1TB of online storage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Laptop Requirements and FAQ All Maine Maritime Academy students are required to have a laptop computer.
